Navy Day is a day to honour the brave and dedicated personnel of the Indian Navy, who protect the country’s maritime interests and security. Navy Day is celebrated on December 4 every year, as it marks the anniversary of Operation Trident, a daring naval attack on Karachi harbour during the 1971 Indo-Pakistan war. The Indian Navy used anti-ship missiles for the first time in this operation, and inflicted heavy damage on the Pakistani vessels and fuel fields, without losing any of its own ships or men. The operation was a decisive victory for India and helped to secure its eastern border.

How is Navy Day celebrated in India?

Navy Day is celebrated with various events and activities across the country, especially in the coastal areas. The Indian Navy organises a Beating Retreat ceremony at the Gateway of India in Mumbai on the eve of Navy Day, where the naval band performs patriotic and martial tunes. The Navy also opens its warships and aircraft to the public, especially school children, to showcase its capabilities and equipment. The Navy also conducts demonstrations, exhibitions, seminars, and sports competitions to spread awareness and appreciation of its role and achievements.

Who is the Father of the Indian Navy and what is its motto?

The Indian Navy traces its origins to the Royal Indian Marine, established by the British East India Company in 1767. After India’s independence in 1947, the Royal Indian Navy was split into the Indian Navy and the Pakistan Navy. The Indian Navy is led by the President of India as the Commander-in-Chief, and the Chief of the Naval Staff as the head of the military staff. The Maratha emperor Chhatrapati Shivaji Bhosle is considered as the Father of the Indian Navy, as he was the first Indian ruler to establish a strong and effective naval force in the 17th century. The motto of the Indian Navy is “Yuddhe Seva”, which means “Service in Battle”.

How strong is the Indian Navy and what are its major achievements?

The Indian Navy is the seventh largest in the world, with a strength of over 67,000 personnel and 150 ships, including aircraft carriers, submarines, destroyers, frigates, corvettes, and patrol vessels. The Navy also operates over 200 aircraft, including fighters, helicopters, and surveillance planes. The Indian Navy has a proud history of service to the nation, and has participated in several wars, conflicts, and operations, both at home and abroad. Some of its major achievements include:

  • Operation Cactus: The evacuation of Indian citizens from Maldives in 1988, when the country faced a coup attempt by armed mercenaries.
  • Operation Rahat: The humanitarian assistance and disaster relief operations in the aftermath of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, which affected several countries in the region.
  • Operation Sankalp: The escort and protection of Indian and foreign ships in the Gulf of Aden and the Arabian Sea, to counter the threat of piracy and terrorism.
  • Operation Madad: The rescue and relief operations in the wake of the 2018 Kerala floods, which caused widespread devastation in the state.

Where can I learn more about the Indian Navy and its activities?
