Oranges are one of the most beloved citrus fruits that offer a sweet and tangy flavour. They are also rich in vitamin C, antioxidants, and fibre that can boost your immunity and digestion. In India, there are several varieties of oranges that are grown in different regions and have their own unique characteristics. Some are more juicy, some are more colourful, and some are more aromatic. In this article, we will introduce you to five of the most popular types of oranges that you can find in India and enjoy this winter season.

Nagpur Oranges: The King of Oranges

Nagpur oranges are named after the city of Nagpur in Maharashtra, where they are predominantly cultivated. They are also known as the king of oranges because of their superior quality and taste. They have a vibrant orange colour, a thin peel, and a seedless pulp that is juicy and sweet. They are ideal for snacking, making salads, or adding to desserts. Nagpur oranges are also famous for their geographical indication (GI) tag, which means they have a specific origin and reputation.

Kinnow Oranges: The Juice Lovers’ Choice

Kinnow oranges are a hybrid variety of oranges that are mainly grown in Punjab and Haryana. They are also called mandarin oranges or santra in Hindi. They have a bright orange colour, a thick peel, and a seeded pulp that is tangy and refreshing. They are best enjoyed as a juice, which can quench your thirst and energize you. You can also use kinnow oranges to make jams, sauces, or cocktails. Kinnow oranges are available from November to March and are a winter speciality.

Coorg Oranges: The Aromatic Delight

Coorg oranges are a native variety of oranges that are grown in the Coorg region of Karnataka. They are also called Coorg mandarin or kodagina kithale hannu in Kannada. They have a pale orange colour, a thin peel, and a small pulp that is juicy and aromatic. They have a distinctive flavour and fragrance that can enhance any dish. You can use Coorg oranges to make marmalades, preserves, or cakes. Coorg oranges are also known for their GI tag and their organic cultivation.

Mudkhed Oranges: The Visual Appeal

Mudkhed oranges are another variety of oranges that are grown in Maharashtra. They are named after a region in the state where they are cultivated. They have a dark orange colour, a medium peel, and a medium pulp that is succulent and sweet. They are visually appealing and also have a good shelf life. You can enjoy Mudkhed oranges as a snack, a juice, or a salad. Mudkhed oranges are also exported to other countries and are a source of income for many farmers.

Khasi Blood Oranges: The Unique Surprise

Khasi blood oranges are a rare variety of oranges that are grown in the northeastern region of India. They are also called khasi narangi or soh phie in Khasi language. They have a deep red colour, a thick peel, and a large pulp that is sweet and sour. They are unique because of their striking colour, which is caused by a pigment called anthocyanin. They are great for adding colour and flavour to dishes, salads, and drinks. Khasi blood oranges are also rich in antioxidants and have medicinal properties.
