Crawl 2 Leaves Florida Behind for a 2027 New York Date
Paramount dated Crawl 2 for July 16, 2027, moving the alligator hit from a Florida crawl space to New York streets with new stars.
Paramount has set July 16, 2027, as the theatrical date for its still-untitled Crawl sequel, a New York hurricane story with new leads. Mason Gooding and Emily Rudd star, Alexandre Aja returns to direct, and the first film’s father-daughter pairing is gone.
The date is calendar work. The change that matters is scale: streets and sewers instead of one flooded Florida house, after the sequel sat through a studio sale.
Paramount Locks a July 2027 Date for Crawl 2
Paramount put the mid-July slot on hold, then filled it on September 18, 2026. Listings already call the picture Crawl 2, even though the studio has not locked a title. Aja produces with Craig Flores and Sam Raimi. Gregory Levasseur, Kevan Van Thompson, and Zainab Azizi are executive producers.
Jason Harry Pagan and Andrew Deutschman wrote the script with Aja and Levasseur. Pagan and Deutschman previously shared credit on Project Almanac and Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension. The original Crawl, released in the United States on July 12, 2019, ran 87 minutes and carried an R rating.
The same calendar move shifts Heart Eyes 2, a Spyglass Valentine slasher, from February 11, 2028, to February 4, 2028. Josh Ruben directs that follow-up. For Crawl, the hold date was the tell: Paramount wanted summer, not a dump month, for a creature picture that first paid off as a midsummer sleeper.
New York, Not Another Florida Basement
The 2019 film trapped Haley Keller and her father Dave, played by Kaya Scodelario and Barry Pepper, in the crawl space of a Florida house as a Category 5 hurricane pushed floodwater and alligators inside. The sequel keeps the reptiles and the storm and throws out the address. After a hurricane hits New York, gators move through the streets and the sewers.
That is a different contract with the audience. The first movie worked because the danger had nowhere to go. Aja said in July 2019 that he did not want a giant radioactive alligator, and he did not want one flying in a tornado. He wanted something close to the realm of possibility, almost as if it were based on a true story. New York sewers are the old urban legend. Florida flood basements are a weather report.
I like the idea of a home invasion type of movie where the home invasion starts with the disaster coming inside your whole house, and then like the creature coming as well. So yes, like a sequel, why not, with different characters, a different story.
Alexandre Aja, director, July 2019 junket
He already enlarged the first script. An early draft stayed in the crawl space with a late reveal of a second animal. Aja opened the film to the hurricane, the rising water, and more alligators, because the basement-only version felt too small. Crawl 2 continues that widening. The house is no longer the cage. The city is.
The $13.5 Million Hit Survived a Studio Sale
Paramount greenlit the sequel in August 2024, five years after the original grossed $91.5 million on a $13.5 million budget. Domestic ticket sales were $39.0 million. International markets added $52.5 million, including a $12.0 million opening weekend in the United States. Critics logged an 84% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Those are the figures that made a second film obvious, and they are also the figures that made a bigger canvas tempting.
HOW THE FIRST FILM COMPARES WITH THE SEQUEL
| Item | Crawl (2019) | Crawl sequel |
|---|---|---|
| Setting | Florida crawl space, Category 5 hurricane | New York streets and sewers after a hurricane |
| Leads | Kaya Scodelario, Barry Pepper | Mason Gooding, Emily Rudd |
| Director | Alexandre Aja | Alexandre Aja |
| Budget | $13.5 million | Not disclosed |
| Box office / status | $91.5 million worldwide | Dated July 16, 2027 |
The money did not speed the sequel up. Aja said in April 2021 that a screenplay was being written. The official greenlight came in August 2024. Then Paramount changed hands, and the film sat.
THE PATH TO A JULY DATE
- August 2024: Paramount greenlights a Crawl sequel with Aja returning to direct.
- January 2025: Plans circulate for a New York-set shoot using stages in Budapest and Belgrade.
- September 2025: Scodelario confirms she will not return.
- February 2026: Raimi says the new group at Paramount is interested and that he has “new hope” to make it.
- August 2026: Gooding and Rudd join the cast.
- August 21, 2026: Filming begins in Budapest with cinematographer Bojan Bazelli.
- September 18, 2026: Paramount sets the July 16, 2027 release.
Raimi, out promoting Send Help that February, did not dress the delay up. He said the studio had changed hands while the team was still trying to get a go, and that the new development group was one he had worked with before.
It’s a little bit, I think, embarrassing to make an alligator in the basement picture. I don’t know if that’s what their lofty ambitions were but I think there’s a crowd that loves those kinds of films, if they’re well-made and honestly trying to make this suspenseful and scary and get to know the characters, if they’re really trying to do that, there’s nothing to be embarrassed about. Yes, it’s a B movie but it’s a blast.
Sam Raimi, producer, February 2026
Seven months after that quote, cameras were rolling. The embarrassment he named is the point of the bet. The new Paramount still wanted the B movie. It also wanted it in New York, with stars who can sell a wider map than a crawl space.
Who Takes Over From Kaya Scodelario?
Mason Gooding and Emily Rudd lead the sequel, and Scodelario and Pepper are not coming back. Aja flagged that swap in 2019, when he talked about different characters and a different story. Scodelario made it official in September 2025. The new pair already share a film, 2022’s Moonshot, so the studio is not introducing two strangers to each other on a water set.
WHAT THE NEW LEADS BRING
- Mason Gooding: A Scream regular who broke out in Booksmart, now the male lead in a franchise that dropped its original star.
- Emily Rudd: A Fear Street alum who later played Nami in Netflix’s live-action One Piece and is attached to the thriller Whalefall.
- The gap they fill: Haley and Dave Keller’s father-daughter survival story is finished; the sequel starts with two younger horror-literate names and no family mythology to protect.
Gooding’s Scream work is the cleaner rhyme. Those films already taught audiences to accept new victims inside an old rule set. Rudd’s Fear Street run did the same on a different lot. Neither has to recreate Scodelario’s swimmer-in-the-dark physical performance. They have to hold a city-scale chase that the first movie never asked for.
Budapest Is Playing a Flooded Manhattan
Filming began on August 21, 2026, in Budapest. Earlier reports also named Belgrade. That geography should sound familiar. The first Crawl was shot over eight weeks in Belgrade, where the production built a small Florida town, houses, floating cars, a gas station, and the crawl space that ate most of the runtime. Aja put about 50 people into that tight set for 12-hour days in the water. The rain and wind, he said, were harder than the water itself.
The sequel is still an Eastern European water shoot standing in for an American disaster. The difference is the thing being faked. A Florida bungalow is a set. New York streets, sewers, and storm surge are a much larger lie, even if the cameras stay in Hungary. Bazelli is shooting it. The original’s alligators were a mix of digital work from Rodeo FX and practical builds; makeup effects artist Adrien Morot rebuilt crocodile molds into full alligators after Aja rejected the snouts, then added two full floating animals on a short clock.
Aja’s 2019 rule was no flying gators in a tornado. A flooded Manhattan with reptiles in the subway is how you keep that rule and still spend more money. The animals stay animals. The playground gets bigger. Whether the claustrophobia survives that upgrade is the question the July date now has to answer in public.
Fake Skating Shares the Date, Superman Owns the Week Before
Crawl 2 does not open into an empty Friday. Warner Bros. has the Superman sequel Man of Tomorrow on July 9, 2027, one week earlier. Sony has the rom-com Fake Skating on the same July 16 date. Two weeks later, Paramount meets itself with A Quiet Place Part III on July 30. Warner Bros. then brings A Minecraft Movie: Squared on July 23, between the gators and the silenced aliens.
THE JULY 2027 NEIGHBORS
| Date | Title | Studio |
|---|---|---|
| July 9, 2027 | Man of Tomorrow | Warner Bros. |
| July 16, 2027 | Crawl sequel; Fake Skating | Paramount; Sony |
| July 23, 2027 | A Minecraft Movie: Squared | Warner Bros. |
| July 30, 2027 | A Quiet Place Part III | Paramount |
The original Crawl opened third in its weekend and still turned a profit because $13.5 million is a hard number to miss when the worldwide take is $91.5 million. A New York-set follow-up, shot as a studio summer title the week after a Superman movie, will not get that same quiet. Paramount already had the mid-July date on hold, which means the studio chose the fight. It did not get dragged into it.
The 2019 film still plays as a high-stress survival picture, which is why a sequel never sounded like a rumor that needed rescuing. What needed rescuing was the greenlight after the sale. The date now on the board says the new group kept the B movie and asked it to fill a bigger room.
Send Help Already Showed the Mid-Budget Horror Check Clears
Raimi did not wait on Crawl 2 to prove the market. He directed Send Help, the Rachel McAdams and Dylan O’Brien island thriller released in the United States on January 30, 2026. Box Office Mojo logs Send Help’s $94 million worldwide total on a $40 million budget, with $64.7 million of that domestic. Zainab Azizi produced that film with him and is now an executive producer on the alligator sequel.
RAIMI’S 2026 HORROR LEDGER
- Send Help: $94.0 million worldwide, $19.1 million opening, in theaters January 30, 2026.
- Evil Dead Burn: $72.4 million worldwide on a $20 million budget, in theaters July 10, 2026, with Raimi producing.
- Crawl 2: Cameras up August 21, 2026; theaters July 16, 2027.
He also has a remake of William Goldman’s Magic in the works. The through line is not brand nostalgia. It is mid-budget fear that can be shot, dated, and recouped without a superhero attached. Crawl 2 is the one that has to do that in New York, with new faces, on a Friday that already has a skating rom-com and a Superman hangover.
Cameras have been up since August 21, 2026. The date is July 16, 2027. The house that made the first film famous is no longer in the picture, and the gators are being asked to hold a city.
