Technology has brought many benefits and opportunities to the modern workplace, but it has also created some challenges and pressures for the younger generation, also known as Gen Z. A psychology professor has shared her insights on how technology affects the work-life balance of Gen Z, and what they can do to cope with it.
Gen Z Faces More Stress Than Previous Generations Due to Technology
According to Kathleen Pike, a psychology professor at Columbia University and president/CEO of One Mind at Work, Gen Z is facing more stress than previous generations due to the erosion of traditional work-life boundaries caused by technology. She said that older generations did not experience the same technology-induced pressures at the beginning of their careers, as work and personal life were more separated without the constant connectivity provided by smartphones or the internet.
Pike said that technology has blurred the lines between work and personal life, and that Gen Z is struggling to navigate this new landscape. She said that technology has increased the expectation of constant availability and the fear of missing out on opportunities, which can lead to anxiety and burnout. She said:
Technology has changed the way we work and live. It has brought many advantages, but it has also created some problems. Gen Z is facing more stress than previous generations, because they have to deal with the demands and distractions of technology
Gen Z Tries to Reintroduce Boundaries to Restore Balance
Pike said that many Gen Z professionals are trying to reintroduce boundaries to restore balance in their work and personal life. She said that some of them are adopting strategies like ‘act your wage’ or ‘quiet quitting’, where they aim to maintain their job without succumbing to burnout. She said:
Gen Z is trying to find ways to cope with the stress of technology. Some of them are trying to act their wage, which means they only work as much as they are paid for. Some of them are trying to quit quietly, which means they leave their job without making a fuss. These are some of the strategies they use to manage their work-life balance
However, Pike warned that these strategies may not be enough to address the underlying issues of technology and stress. She said that Gen Z needs to recognize the difference between normal stress and serious mental illness, and seek help when needed. She said:
These strategies may help in the short term, but they may not solve the root causes of the problem. Gen Z needs to understand the difference between normal stress and serious mental illness, and get professional help if they are suffering from depression, anxiety, or other mental disorders
Gen Z Needs to Develop Resilience and Skills to Adapt to Technology
Pike said that Gen Z needs to develop resilience and skills to adapt to the changing work environment, and to use technology in a positive and productive way. She said that Gen Z needs to learn how to set boundaries, prioritize tasks, communicate effectively, and manage their emotions. She said:
Gen Z needs to develop resilience and skills to deal with technology and stress. They need to learn how to set boundaries, and say no when they are overwhelmed. They need to learn how to prioritize tasks, and focus on what is important. They need to learn how to communicate effectively, and express their needs and expectations. They need to learn how to manage their emotions, and cope with negative feelings
Pike also praised Gen Z for normalizing conversations about mental health in the workplace, and for seeking more flexibility and autonomy in their work. She said that Gen Z is bringing a new perspective and a new energy to the workplace, and that they can make a positive impact on the world. She said:
Gen Z is also doing some good things for their mental health and their work. They are talking more openly about their mental health, and asking for more support. They are seeking more flexibility and autonomy in their work, and finding their own ways to work. They are bringing a new perspective and a new energy to the workplace, and they can make a positive difference in the world.
Gen Z is the generation that grew up with technology, and is facing the challenges and the opportunities that it brings. Technology has affected their work-life balance, and their mental health. Gen Z needs to find ways to cope with the stress of technology, and to use it in a positive and productive way. Gen Z also needs to recognize the difference between normal stress and serious mental illness, and to seek help when needed. Gen Z can also leverage their strengths and their potential, and contribute to the workplace and the society.
