Mumbai: In a big move to avoid a box office face-off, Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s highly anticipated film Love & War, starring Ranbir Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, and Vicky Kaushal, has officially been pushed back from its original March 2026 release date.
Delay to Avoid Clash with Yash’s Pan-India Film Toxic
The grand romantic epic, which was earlier locked for a March 20, 2026 release, will no longer arrive on that date. According to insiders, Bhansali’s team decided to postpone Love & War to steer clear of a direct clash with Yash’s upcoming action drama Toxic, which hits theaters on March 19, 2026.
The decision was reportedly made after internal discussions about the mounting production delays and the scale of both projects. Industry sources confirmed that around 75 days of shooting still remain for Love & War, forcing the team to revise its timeline.
“It made no sense for two Pan-Indian spectacles to compete head-to-head,” said a trade analyst familiar with the matter. “Both films are mounted on massive budgets and are expected to draw audiences across regions. By avoiding the clash, both will have a fair run.”

Shooting Schedule Delays Push Release to Second Half of 2026
While the initial plan aimed for an Eid 2026 release, production setbacks have made that target unfeasible. The shoot is reportedly running about 40 days behind schedule, mainly due to logistical challenges and the film’s large-scale war sequences.
Sanjay Leela Bhansali has now requested his lead actors—Ranbir Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, and Vicky Kaushal—to block bulk dates through the summer of 2026 to wrap up the film’s principal photography.
Industry buzz now points toward a revised release window in the second half of 2026, most likely around June or July. The team is expected to make an official announcement once the remaining shoot is locked and post-production timelines are finalized.
International Schedule Scrapped, Italy Scenes Recreated in Mumbai
Bhansali initially planned a 45-day international schedule in Italy to film key portions of Love & War, but that plan was dropped due to logistical constraints and high costs. Instead, the director recreated the European setting at a Mumbai studio near Royal Palms in Goregaon.
A source close to the production revealed that Bhansali preferred complete control over lighting and set design. “He wanted the grandeur of Europe but with the flexibility of a controlled environment,” the source said. “The Italy schedule was proving too complex to execute. So, he rebuilt the look in Mumbai and completed a 10-day shoot with the lead cast before Diwali.”
However, the film’s grand climax sequence will reportedly be shot in Italy in December 2025, marking the team’s return to international filming for the final stretch.
Inside Love & War: A Romantic Epic Set in Turmoil
Love & War is said to be a passionate war-time love triangle that intertwines duty, sacrifice, and heartbreak. The story centers around two army officers, played by Ranbir Kapoor and Vicky Kaushal, whose friendship and loyalty are tested by their shared love for a woman, portrayed by Alia Bhatt.
The film marks a much-awaited reunion between Ranbir Kapoor and Sanjay Leela Bhansali, who last collaborated on Saawariya in 2007—Ranbir’s debut film. This time, the director is said to be exploring a darker, more emotional tone inspired by classic war romances.
Bhansali, known for his visual splendor and emotionally charged storytelling, is said to be blending large-scale battle sequences with intimate personal drama. With the director’s signature opulence and a cast of some of India’s finest actors, expectations are soaring.
What This Means for the 2026 Box Office
The postponement of Love & War is expected to ease pressure on one of the most competitive release seasons in recent memory. Both Love & War and Toxic are massive Pan-India projects targeting multilingual audiences, and a clash could have divided both markets and multiplex screens.
For Yash, whose Toxic follows his blockbuster KGF franchise, the new release date keeps his film in the spotlight without competition from Bollywood’s biggest trio. For Bhansali and his team, the delay provides breathing room to complete VFX-heavy scenes and maintain the director’s uncompromising visual standards.
Trade analysts believe this move could benefit both sides:
Love & War gets additional time for production and marketing buildup.
Toxic secures a clear release window for maximum audience reach.
“The decision to delay is strategic,” said a Mumbai-based distributor. “After the success of Animal and Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, Ranbir and Alia’s next collaboration under Bhansali’s direction is too valuable to risk in a box office clash.”
Ranbir-Alia-Vicky’s Busy Year Ahead
All three leads are balancing multiple commitments, which also contributed to the production delay. Ranbir Kapoor is wrapping a mythological action film expected to release in early 2026. Alia Bhatt is shooting for her spy thriller under YRF Spy Universe, while Vicky Kaushal recently finished his untitled biopic project.
Coordinating their schedules for Bhansali’s extended shoot has proven challenging, prompting the director to plan a compact but intense filming calendar for early 2026.
Despite the delay, anticipation for Love & War continues to grow. Fans have flooded social media with excitement about the rare pairing of three of India’s most acclaimed actors in a Bhansali spectacle.
The film promises to combine the emotional power of Bhansali’s classic romances with the intensity of a war epic, making it one of 2026’s most awaited releases.
In the grand tradition of Bhansali’s cinema, Love & War is shaping up to be both a visual feast and an emotional rollercoaster, now set to arrive later in 2026 after its final European schedule wraps.
As the wait extends, fans are already counting down the months, eager to see if the film can live up to the monumental expectations it has created.
The coming summer may bring the final chapter of this love story set against the chaos of war—and perhaps the biggest cinematic event of the year.
