Apple TV ordered Slow Horses Season 8 to adapt Mick Herron’s last published Slough House novel, Clown Town, with Ben Vanstone writing before Season 6 even starts.

Apple TV has ordered a six-episode Slow Horses Season 8, adapting Mick Herron’s last published Slough House novel, Clown Town. The pickup landed on September 15, 2026, the morning after the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards, and a day before Season 6 reaches the app.

Gary Oldman returns as Jackson Lamb. Ben Vanstone, already lined up for Season 7, will adapt Season 8 and executive produce it, with Adam Randall directing. The original writer is already gone. The last printed book is what Apple just bought.

Apple Locks Clown Town Before Season 6 Lands

Apple’s press office six-episode eighth season of Slow Horses as an adaptation of Clown Town, the ninth novel in Herron’s series. Sir Gary Oldman is named on the call sheet. Season 7, already announced in 2025, still has no air date. Season 6, which folds two novels into one run, opens September 16, 2026.

That calendar is the tell. The show has been shooting ahead of the audience since See-Saw Films started making it for Apple, and the new order keeps that machine booked past a season nobody has watched yet. Lamb’s filthy coat will still be on the hook. The people writing the insults around it will not be the same ones who got the series to air.

THE NEW ORDER

  • Episode count: Season 8 is six episodes, matching the show’s usual run.
  • Source novel: Clown Town, the ninth Slough House book and the last one in print.
  • Next to air: Season 6 begins September 16, 2026, then lands one episode each Wednesday.
  • Who writes it: Vanstone adapts Season 8; Randall, who also directed Season 6, returns to shoot it.

Jay Hunt, Apple TV’s creative director for international, used the same line the streamer always uses for this show, the misfits, the acid take on spy work. She did not mention trophies. She did not need to. The books were already doing the work.

The Last Printed Book on the Shelf

Herron has been feeding Apple a novel at a time since Slow Horses, the 2010 book that named the series, and for five seasons the mapping was clean: one book, six hours. Season 6 breaks that habit on purpose. It adapts Joe Country and Slough House, the sixth and seventh novels, in a single batch so the characters keep moving. Season 7 takes Bad Actors, the eighth. Season 8 now takes Clown Town, which arrived on September 11, 2025.

There is no tenth novel with a title or a date. Herron said in September 2025 that more books will come and that he has not decided how many. Until one exists, Clown Town is the end of the printed line, and Apple just reserved it. Mick Herron is also listed as an executive producer on the series, which puts the novelist inside the company that is spending his remaining chapters.

Douglas Urbanski, an executive producer, has already been asked what happens if the show outruns the novels. Most TV shows do not have books, he said, so they can figure it out, and Herron has not stopped writing. That is a producer’s hedge. It is also an admission that Season 8, as ordered, uses up the stack.

How the Seasons Line Up With Herron’s Novels

Viewers who only watch the show are about to skip a book without noticing, because Season 6 eats two of them. The table is the whole production logic in one grid: stay close to Herron, never wait for him, and compress when a pair of novels can share six hours.

THE BOOK-TO-SEASON MAP

Season Herron novel Where it stands
1 Slow Horses Aired 2022
2 Dead Lions Aired 2022
3 Real Tigers Aired 2023
4 Spook Street Aired 2024
5 London Rules Aired 2025
6 Joe Country and Slough House Opens September 16, 2026
7 Bad Actors Announced in 2025
8 Clown Town Ordered September 15, 2026

Season 6’s first episode debuts September 16, 2026, then a weekly run through October 21, six Wednesdays in a row. Apple has not dated Season 7 or Season 8. Guessing 2027 and 2028 is easy and unofficial. The only dates on paper are the ones above.

Three Writers, One Trench Coat

Will Smith, the British writer who ran Slow Horses from the 2019 series order through Season 5, is not coming back. Gaby Chiappe, who came in to write two Season 6 episodes and then inherited the room, has already said taking over was never the plan. Vanstone, whose credits include All Creatures Great and Small, has Season 7 and now the Clown Town scripts as well.

Smith described the exit as a practical bind, not a fight. The Season 5 writers’ room overlapped the Season 3 edit and the Season 4 shoot, and Apple would not slide the calendar. Chiappe inherited a show she was a fan of and a crew she says is exhausted by the turnaround. Vanstone was hired as a separate head writer so that overlap would not crush a second season in a row. Apple then handed him the last published book too.

THE WRITER HANDOFF

  • Seasons 1 to 5: Will Smith ran the room from the Apple order through the Season 5 finale, Scars.
  • Season 6: Gaby Chiappe adapts Joe Country and Slough House; Randall directs.
  • Seasons 7 and 8: Ben Vanstone adapts Bad Actors, then Clown Town, and executive produces Season 8.

Oldman is the continuity the credits cannot replace. So is the coat. The joke on the announcement posts was that Lamb has not changed it since 2021, which is another way of saying the series can swap showrunners faster than it can swap its lead. Randall is the other repeat name: he won an Emmy for directing Season 4, came back for Season 6, and is now booked for Season 8.

HOW THE PIPELINE GOT THIS FAR AHEAD

  1. October 2019: Apple orders Slow Horses, with Smith writing and See-Saw Films producing.
  2. April 2022: Season 1 premieres, the first of six seasons to land in just over four years.
  3. July 2025: Smith confirms he is leaving after Season 5; Chiappe and Vanstone are named for the next two runs; Season 7 is already on the books.
  4. September 11, 2025: Clown Town is published, giving Apple a ninth novel to chase.
  5. September 14, 2026: Saul Metzstein wins Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series for Scars.
  6. September 15, 2026: Apple orders Season 8 and names Vanstone and Randall on it.
  7. September 16, 2026: Season 6 begins, two novels deep, with the last printed book already spoken for.

See-Saw Films, now part of Mediawan, remains the producer. Jamie Laurenson, Hakan Kousetta, Urbanski, Randall, Iain Canning, Emile Sherman, Gail Mutrux, Billy Bowring, Helen Gregory, Herron and Oldman are the Season 8 executive producers Apple listed.

What Clown Town Puts on Screen

Apple’s own logline is a Lamb-versus-Taverner fight. A botched attempt to blackmail the Park, MI5’s headquarters, puts Diana Taverner on the offensive, and Lamb has to unravel one of the service’s darkest secrets. Kristin Scott Thomas has played Taverner since the start; the new season is built around that collision even if Apple’s order names only Oldman in the talent line.

Herron’s jacket copy is more specific, and it is the plot Vanstone has to dramatise. River Cartwright, still waiting to be passed fit after a near-fatal poisoning, starts poking at his dead grandfather’s library and finds a mysteriously missing book. Taverner, First Desk at the Park, does not like being threatened. People from a covert operation at the height of the Troubles want to expose the ugly side of state security, and she tries to turn the blackmail into an opportunity. Catherine Standish wants everyone to play nice. Lamb wants his rejects at their desks, because when Taverner plots, people get hurt.

He has no plans to send in the clowns. If they ignore him, the harm is hardly his fault. They are still his clowns. If they do not all come home, there will be a reckoning. That last turn is why Randall, already reading the book as the Season 8 director, is not promising a full set of survivors.

We don’t kill anyone Mick hasn’t killed. It’s really exciting. With Clown Town, I knew I was going to do it, and I was reading the book thinking, who survives Clown Town?

Adam Randall, Season 8 director

The novel’s supporting wreckage includes an IRA informer, a cassette that implicates a senior figure, and Peter Judd, Herron’s shock-haired politician, circling a comeback. That is not in Apple’s paragraph. All of it is in the book Vanstone now has to cut into six hours without breaking Lamb’s voice, which Smith spent five seasons locking in.

Nine Nominations, One Directing Win

The Television Academy records Slow Horses with three Emmy Awards from 23 nominations. On September 14, 2026, the show took nine nominations and one statue. Metzstein won Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series for Scars, the Season 5 finale. The series lost Outstanding Drama Series. Oldman lost lead actor. Jack Lowden lost supporting actor. Smith lost writing for Scars. Jonathan Pryce was nominated as a guest for David Cartwright. Casting, production design and the score were nominated too.

The career wins sit in three different years: Smith’s writing award for the Season 3 episode Negotiating With Tigers, Randall’s directing award for the Season 4 finale Hello Goodbye, and Metzstein’s Scars win. Apple also lists five BAFTA Television Awards for the series. Oldman still does not have an Emmy for Lamb. The order went out anyway, because the order was never about that night.

Slow Horses continues to charm audiences all around the world and I’m delighted that Jackson Lamb and his gang of lovable misfits will be back for an eighth season. Their acerbic take on the high-octane world of espionage is completely unique.

Jay Hunt, creative director, International, Apple TV

Apple’s wider Emmy night belonged to other shows on the same service. Slow Horses left with a directing prize and a book contract. For a series that kills the people Herron kills, that is a more useful haul than a shelf of actors’ trophies.

Herron Has Not Closed the File

Clown Town’s hardback hit number four on the Sunday Times list in the second week of September 2025. The paperback was number nine in the first week of May 2026. The novels have enough readers to keep a London shoot busy, and enough corpses to keep Randall nervous. What they do not have, yet, is a tenth mainline book for a Season 9 to steal.

Novellas sit in the gaps, The List, The Drop, The Catch, Standing by the Wall, and they have not been used as full seasons. If Apple ever needs a bridge, that shelf exists. Urbanski’s line about figuring it out without books is the other bridge. Neither is a tenth Herron novel. Vanstone’s immediate job is the one that is printed.

Season 6 still has to land first. The Slow Horses are on the run, Taverner has pulled them into a revenge game, and new faces, including Olivia Cooke’s Sid and Lenny Rush, are already in the Season 6 stills. Watch that, and Bad Actors is still in the can. Clown Town is the chapter after that, now with a season number on it, and with the man who wrote the first five years watching from outside the room.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Mick Herron book is Slow Horses Season 8 based on?

Clown Town, published in September 2025 as the ninth Slough House novel. Hachette logged it as a Sunday Times number four hardback bestseller in the second week of that month, then a number nine paperback in the first week of May 2026, which is the printed book Apple has now assigned a season.

Why does Slow Horses Season 6 adapt two novels?

Urbanski said Joe Country and Slough House each felt thin enough to combine, so the six-episode run could keep character momentum instead of stretching one shorter book. It is the first Slow Horses season built that way, and it is what lets Season 8 reach Clown Town without skipping Bad Actors.

Why did Will Smith leave Slow Horses after Season 5?

Smith said the Season 5 writers’ room ran at the same time as the Season 3 edit and the Season 4 shoot, and that he was not going to get Season 6 scripts done on Apple’s calendar. He called it a practical acceptance of reality; Chiappe and then Vanstone were hired so the doubled-up schedule would have two different head writers.

What Emmys had Slow Horses already won before Scars?

Smith won Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series in 2024 for Negotiating With Tigers, a Season 3 episode, and Randall won Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series in 2025 for Hello Goodbye, the Season 4 finale. Metzstein’s Scars award is the third, which is why the Academy tally now reads three wins.
