Zverev Wins the US Open Without Seeing Match Point

Alexander Zverev won the 2026 US Open after a first-round scare and a match point he did not notice, beating Ben Shelton in four sets.

Alexander Zverev won the 2026 US Open on an unreturned serve he did not treat as match point. The score was 6-3, 7-6(2), 5-7, 6-2 against Ben Shelton on September 13, and his brother Mischa, courtside, had to tell him the championship was over.

It was the New York title the German let slip in 2020, and it arrived two weeks after he had been two points from a first-round loss. He is 29. This was his second major of the year.

Two Points From Going Home

Seeded No. 1 in New York for the first time, Zverev opened against Lorenzo Sonego, ranked No. 89, and spent 4 hours 53 minutes on Arthur Ashe Stadium getting out. The official score was 6-4, 3-6, 6-7(7), 7-5, 6-4. Sonego took the third-set tiebreak 9-7 after Zverev had held a set point at 7-6, then stood two points from the match in the fourth before the top seed broke, held, and forced a fifth.

“Incredible battle, a lot of ups and downs, nearly five hours for a first-round match,” Zverev said. “I think this is the longest first-round match I’ve ever played in my life.” He converted five of 22 break points and still needed Sonego to double-fault on break point for a 3-2 lead in the fifth. A second five-setter against Quentin Halys followed. By the time he reached the final he had been on court 19 hours 38 minutes, the fourth-longest grind to a major final since 1991.

He was the third German man to enter a Slam as the top seed, after Boris Becker at Wimbledon in 1987 and Gottfried von Cramm at the French Championships in 1935. Sonego’s bid to become the third man to beat a No. 1 seed in the US Open first round, after Alexander Volkov in 1990 and Jan Kodes in 1971, ended on a forehand long. Zverev told the late crowd it was time to sleep. Then he had to do it again.

THE 2026 SLAM YEAR

  1. January 2026: Reaches the Australian Open semi-finals after losing the 2025 final there to Jannik Sinner.
  2. June 7, 2026: Wins a first major in Paris, 6-1, 4-6, 6-4, 6-7(5), 6-1 against Flavio Cobolli in 4 hours 16 minutes.
  3. July 2026: Reaches the Wimbledon final five weeks after Paris.
  4. September 13, 2026: Beats Shelton in four sets for the US Open title, his sixth major final and third of the season.

He is the only German man to have reached all four major singles finals. The fortnight in New York still had to start with a match he almost lost.

He Never Looked Up at Match Point

Shelton walked in as the No. 8 seed in a first Grand Slam final, 0-5 against Zverev and with one set taken off him, in Cincinnati in 2024. Zverev broke in the opening game and again at 5-3, when Shelton’s second double fault of the set landed on set point. Both of those double faults came on break points. Zverev hit one first serve at 141 mph and did not drop a first-serve point until the eighth game.

Shelton forced a second-set tiebreak and then watched it vanish. Zverev went up 5-0, reached 147 mph, and closed 7-6(2). The American had never won a tiebreak in four previous breaker sets against him. For two hours he could not earn a break point. When one finally arrived in the third, Zverev erased it with a backhand winner after a 133 mph serve.

The set still got away. Serving at 5-6 to force a tiebreak, Zverev sprayed two loose balls and handed Shelton three break points. The American needed two of them. That hold-streak, 66 in a row in the matchup, ended, and Ashe woke up. Zverev broke in the first game of the fourth, broke again for 5-2, and lost four points on serve in the entire set. He won 12 of the last 14 points and finished it with an unreturned ball, so locked in he stayed on the baseline until Mischa told him to stop.

He won 85 percent of first-serve points (68 of 80) and is 44-1 against left-handers since the 2023 French Open. The head-to-head is now 6-0. The match ran 3 hours 33 minutes.

The tournament account put the six-year wait in four words and a skyline.

A Four-Man Club With Two Trophies

The title made Zverev the fourth man in the Open Era to take his first two majors in the same season. Jimmy Connors did it in 1974, Guillermo Vilas in 1977, Jannik Sinner in 2024. Connors actually won three that year, the Australian Open, Wimbledon and the US Open. Vilas and Sinner, like Zverev, stopped at two.

THE SAME-SEASON FIRST TWO

Player Year The majors
Jimmy Connors 1974 Australian Open, Wimbledon, US Open
Guillermo Vilas 1977 Roland-Garros, US Open
Jannik Sinner 2024 Australian Open, US Open
Alexander Zverev 2026 Roland-Garros, US Open

Paris had been the hard one. Zverev’s maiden title over Flavio Cobolli ran five sets on Court Philippe-Chatrier after three prior Slam final losses, the 2020 US Open to Dominic Thiem, the 2024 French Open to Carlos Alcaraz, the 2025 Australian Open to Sinner. He is the second German US Open men’s champion after Becker in 1989. The winner’s cheque was a $5.5 million singles champion payout, with $2.8 million to the runner-up, from $108 million in total player compensation, up 20 percent from $90 million in 2025.

“We went 30 years without winning a Grand Slam and now we won two in the span of three months,” Zverev said to his team. “I think God has seen how hard we worked, how much we suffered, how much pain we went through, and I think 2026 is the outcome of all the years that happened before.”

America Still Waits for a Men’s Champion

Andy Roddick, in 2003, remains the last American man to win this title. That drought is now 23 years. Shelton, 23, had the home crowd, a 24,000-capacity stadium, and a draw that had already taken a piece out of the field.

WHAT SHELTON DID TO GET THERE

  • The quarter-final: He knocked out defending champion Carlos Alcaraz.
  • The semi-final: He beat Frances Tiafoe, a three-time US Open semi-finalist, in an all-American match.
  • The ranking: He moves to a career-high No. 4 after his first major final.
  • The cheque: Runner-up pay is $2.8 million.

The title still did not require Zverev to beat Alcaraz or Sinner. Shelton had already removed the defending champion, and the final was a sixth meeting with a player who had never taken a match off the German. That is a thinner last step than the trophy speech will admit, and it will follow both men to Australia.

“I’m just getting started and I’ll be back here again,” Shelton told the crowd. Later he said he was disappointed with the final, pleased with the two weeks, and sure the loss would sting. He wants to show up in Melbourne stronger than he showed up in New York. Brad Pitt, Emily Blunt, Pierce Brosnan, and New York Knicks players Jalen Brunson, Karl-Anthony Towns and Josh Hart were in the building. Shelton called walking out “an addicting feeling” and described himself as a late bloomer who has rarely won the first time he reaches a final, from juniors through Challengers to this one.

The One Voice He Needed in the Box

Both finalists are coached by their fathers. Zverev went to Shelton’s box after the handshake and found Bryan Shelton. He told Ben he would bet all his money on him winning this trophy one day, then thanked “pops, mom and sister” on that side of the court because, he said, their team pulls on the same strings his does.

Trinity Rodman, Shelton’s girlfriend and a Washington Spirit forward, had a home game in D.C. on Sunday and still made the tail of the final. “I knew it was going to be pretty close to impossible to get here, but even just making the effort and trying is insane,” Shelton said. “She kind of showed up as I was losing, which for her probably sucked.”

The person Zverev put at the center of the night was not in the stands. Irina Zverev does not watch his matches live. She is the parent who walked out of a doctor’s office after a four-year-old diagnosis and refused the limits she was given.

When your 4-year-old son gets diagnosed with diabetes and doctors in the office tell you that life and sports will be very limited for that child, it takes a very, very strong mother to walk out of those offices and say ‘My son will be whatever he wants to be.’ If he wants to be a tennis player, he’ll be a tennis player. If he wants to do something else, he’ll do something else. But this illness will not define us.

He called her the strongest person he knows. The brother who actually saw the last ball was the one who had to announce it.

1,810 Points Still Separate Him From No. 1

Zverev leaves New York as the No. 1 seed who is still the world No. 2. Sinner remains ahead on the live board. The Infosys ATP Win/Loss Index has Zverev at a tour-leading 53 wins in 2026, with a 25-2 record at the majors, and only two titles, both of them Slams.

THE BOARD AFTER NEW YORK

  • Live rankings: Zverev is 1,810 points behind Sinner at No. 1.
  • Race to Turin: He is 700 points clear in the Race to Turin, the year-end No. 1 barometer.
  • Tour wins: 53-2 at the majors this year sits inside a 53-win season that leads the tour.
  • Shelton: A new career-high of No. 4.

Wait. I used “sits inside” and a 53-2 slip. Fix silently: majors are 25-2, tour wins are 53. Also “sits inside” is banned. Rewrite that bullet in the actual emit.
