Metroid Ravenous Turns Dread’s Hit Into a Switch 2 Bet

Nintendo dates Metroid Ravenous for January 28, 2027 on Switch 2, stacking amiibo and a sold-out special edition on Dread’s 2.9 million-copy bet.

Nintendo set Metroid Ravenous for January 28, 2027, as a Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive, during its September 9, 2026 Direct. The 2D game strands Samus Aran on an unfamiliar moon after an ambush and tells her to feed on whatever is hunting her. Pre-orders opened the same day, with a special edition, two retail amiibo, and a third figure locked to the bundle.

That is a full retail event for a series Nintendo used to leave on the shelf for a generation. Dread, the last 2D entry, sold 2.9 million copies by March 31, 2022 and passed Metroid Prime. Ravenous is the first test of whether that number was a peak or a new floor.

Nintendo Dates Metroid Ravenous for January 28

The Direct clip is short and mean. Samus is jumped, drained, and left to crawl through ruins while things bite back. Nintendo of America posted the line that now sits on the box: “It’s eat or be eaten when Metroid Ravenous, the latest game in the 2D Metroid series, arrives on Nintendo Switch 2 Jan 28!”

The US store lists a single-player Switch 2 game with amiibo support, surround sound, HDR, and 120 Hz output on compatible TVs. Estimated download size is 20.2 GB. ESRB tagged it Animated Blood, Violence. In Europe the same build is PEGI 12 for violence. Nintendo is the publisher. The company has not named a studio.

Madrid’s MercurySteam made Dread in 2021 and Samus Returns before that. Ravenous looks and moves like that lineage, with more melee and a feeding finish, but the credits are still blank. Anyone calling it a MercurySteam sequel is guessing from the footage, not from a credit Nintendo has printed.

Dread’s 2.9 Million Copies Changed the Calendar

Dread launched on October 8, 2021. Nintendo’s results for the year ended March 31, 2022 put it at 2.9 million copies, about 60,000 ahead of Metroid Prime’s 2.84 million, which had held the franchise record since the GameCube. About 270,000 of Dread’s copies were in Japan; the other 2.63 million were overseas.

That six-month total ended a 19-year wait after Metroid Fusion in 2002. Ravenous is due just over five years after Dread, on a new box, with a date attached at reveal. Nintendo did not wait for another hardware generation to see if 2D Samus still sold.

THE METROID SALES BENCHMARK

  • Dread: 2.9 million by March 31, 2022, now the series best-seller.
  • Metroid Prime: 2.84 million, the mark Dread passed in that same fiscal year.
  • Prime 4: Beyond: launched December 4, 2025; Nintendo later said combined Switch and Switch 2 sales had passed 1 million by February 2026.

Prime 4 had to add two SKUs to clear a million. Dread did nearly three million on one. The Direct crowd treated Ravenous as the cleaner hit, the game you point at after a split-platform sequel that never got its own million-seller line. Nintendo’s financial results for the year ended March 31, 2026 said Switch 2 sold 19.86 million units in that term. Ravenous is exclusive to that smaller, still-growing base, 141 days after the Direct.

Samus Feeds to Climb Back to the Surface

Nintendo’s own copy is blunter than the title. After her ship crash-lands on a moon, Samus is ambushed by a mysterious group of assassins and left severely wounded. She has to push through an underground world, pick up new abilities, and get back to the surface. To do it she uses “latent Metroid powers” and regains energy by feeding on prey. The loop Nintendo describes is specific: stun an enemy by countering, then drain it before it gets up.

I was attacked by unknown assailants and sustained grave injuries. I don’t know where I am. Getting back to the surface won’t be easy. My chances of getting off this moon are slim at best. I will survive and I will make it home. Even if I have to feed on my enemies to do so. It’s eat or be eaten.

Samus Aran, Metroid Ravenous announcement trailer, Nintendo of America

She speaks in first person in that clip, which is rare for a 2D Metroid reveal. The tone matches the mechanic. Energy tanks used to be pickups in a wall. Here the wall bites, and she bites back. Nintendo’s US listing tells players to strike quickly with beams, missiles, “and more, lest you become the enemy’s next meal.” Footage from the Direct also shows water running, mid-air warps, and finishers. Those are trailer tricks until a longer playable slice lands.

How Much Each Edition and Amiibo Costs

Nintendo opened pre-orders on September 9 for a standard game and a collector bundle, plus two figures sold on their own. The US store’s digital edition listed at $59.99. Physical copies list at $69.99. The Special Edition lists at $119.99 and includes the physical game, a SteelBook case, and a Samus (Metroid Suit) amiibo that Nintendo says is not sold separately.

RAVENOUS AT RETAIL

Product What you get Listed price
Digital game 20.2 GB download, Switch 2 exclusive $59.99
Physical game Standard retail copy $69.99
Special Edition Game, SteelBook, exclusive Metroid Suit amiibo $119.99
Samus amiibo Standard Metroid Ravenous Series figure $24.99
Chozo Statue amiibo Larger-than-standard figure $44.99

Best Buy’s Special Edition allocation disappeared the afternoon of the Direct, and Nintendo’s US store listing went to sold out with it. Resale listings jumped well above the $119.99 sticker before anyone had a review, a preview build, or a note on what the figures actually unlock. Nintendo’s store page says details about amiibo functions will arrive later. The Chozo Statue page is already specific about the sculpt: larger than a normal amiibo, knees raised, palms out, the classic upgrade pose.

Brazil Listed the Title on July 1

The name was not a surprise inside the Direct. Brazil’s Official Gazette of the Union printed Metroid Ravenous on July 1, 2026, then the public listing vanished. The gazette row named Nintendo of America as producer and distributor, put the United States as country of origin, and set 2026 as the production year. A proposed “not recommended under 10” rating was assigned as not recommended for children under 12, with violence as the descriptor. The process number was 08017.001246/2026-7.

FROM LEAK TO SHELF

  1. July 1, 2026: Brazil’s gazette lists Metroid Ravenous at 12+ for violence; the public row is pulled.
  2. September 9, 2026: Nintendo Direct reveals the 2D Switch 2 game, the January 28 date, amiibo, and special edition; pre-orders open.
  3. January 28, 2027: Standard, special, and amiibo lineup are due in stores and on the eShop.

Two months is a short gap between a ratings leak and a dated trailer. Nintendo still held the footage, the moon setup, and the feeding loop until the Direct. The gazette did not name a developer, a platform in the surviving summary, or a price. Those waited for September 9.

Five Space Ninjas Wait Underground

Nintendo’s UK page names the hunters. The five Space Ninjas who ambushed Samus wait in the labyrinth for one-on-one fights “up close and personal” with their weapons. That is the boss spine Nintendo is willing to print. The rest of the moon is still a maze of corridors, item gates, and “powerful bosses” in the generic overview.

WHAT NINTENDO HAS ACTUALLY SAID

  • The setting: An unfamiliar moon, after a crash, with the surface as the escape goal.
  • The wound: Samus is gravely injured in the opening ambush and has to feed to keep moving.
  • The suit: A Metroid Suit is real enough to get its own exclusive amiibo; in-game function is unlisted.
  • The figures: Samus, a jumbo Chozo Statue, and the bundle-only Metroid Suit all drop on launch day.

The Metroid Suit amiibo copy says she will need those newly awakened instincts “and tap into the overwhelming power of her Metroid Suit, to emerge victorious.” That is marketing, but it is also the only official hint that the feeding loop has a suit payoff, not just a health steal. Chozo statues in this series have always held the next upgrade. Putting a larger one on a $44.99 peg next to a $24.99 Samus is Nintendo betting collectors will pay for the altar and the hunter.

The Switch 2 Slot Is the Wager

January 28 sits in a quiet stretch of the calendar, 141 days after the reveal, exclusive to hardware Nintendo said had sold 19.86 million units by the end of last fiscal year. Digital is $59.99. The $119.99 bundle already ran out. Amiibo functions are still a later-date promise. The studio is unnamed. The feeding loop is a trailer and a store blurb.

Dread’s 2.9 million copies are why this sequel has a Wednesday date instead of another long silence. Prime 4 needed two versions to pass a million. Ravenous is the 2D line asking to be a regular Switch 2 event, with a darker Samus, three figures, and a moon that eats back. The next number that matters is the one Nintendo prints after January 28.
