India Builds the iPhone 18 Pro and Still Pays More
Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro is $1,199 in the US and ₹1,64,900 in India, a 45% gap, even as Indian plants feed American day-one sales and the Duo faces a 20% duty.
Apple listed the iPhone 18 Pro at $1,199 in the United States and at ₹1,64,900 in India after its September 9 event. Pre-orders for the Pro and Pro Max open at 5:30 p.m. IST on September 12, with sales from September 18, while the foldable iPhone Duo waits until October.
Indian plants now turn out about a quarter of the world’s iPhones, and some American day-one Pro Max units will leave those lines. The India ticket still jumped ₹30,000. The US ticket rose $100.
Official Prices Across Seven Markets
Apple’s “Surprise and Shine” event on September 9 put three phones on the board: the 6.3-inch iPhone 18 Pro, the 6.9-inch iPhone 18 Pro Max, and the iPhone Duo, a book-style foldable with a 7.6-inch inner screen and a 5.4-inch cover display. Storage on all three runs 256GB, 512GB, 1TB and, for the first time on a Pro iPhone, 2TB. Pro colours are burgundy, glacier, silver and black. The Duo ships in Night Sky and Star White.
The company’s US newsroom says the iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,199 (about ₹1,13,905 at ₹95 to the dollar, before state sales tax), with the Pro Max at $1,299 and the Duo at $1,999. Apple’s India site lists the Pro from ₹1,64,900 for 256GB. That is the comparison most shopping posts ran overnight, and on raw stickers the United States is the cheap market in the set.
LAUNCH STICKERS BY MARKET
| Market | iPhone 18 Pro | iPhone 18 Pro Max | iPhone Duo |
|---|---|---|---|
| United States | $1,199 | $1,299 | $1,999 |
| India | ₹1,64,900 | ₹1,79,900 | ₹2,99,900 |
| United Kingdom | £1,199 | £1,299 | £1,999 |
| Germany | €1,449 | €1,599 | €2,299 |
| China | CNY 9,999 | CNY 10,999 | CNY 15,999 |
| Japan | JPY 219,800 | JPY 239,800 | JPY 364,800 |
| UAE | AED 5,099 | AED 5,499 | AED 8,499 |
First-wave pre-orders for the Pro phones cover 65 countries and regions on September 12, with a second group of 20 countries on September 25. The Duo opens for pre-order on October 16 in more than 70 countries, ships October 23, and reaches 28 more countries on October 30. UK Duo prices match the US figures digit for digit, pounds for dollars, which is a currency choice, not a bargain.
India Raised the Pro Line by ₹30,000
The generation-to-generation move is where the India list stops looking like a simple conversion. Last year’s iPhone 17 Pro opened at $1,099 in the US and ₹1,34,900 in India. The 18 Pro adds $100 there and ₹30,000 here. The Pro Max follows the same split: $1,199 to $1,299 against ₹1,49,900 to ₹1,79,900.
YEAR-ON-YEAR BASE HIKES
| Model | US hike | US change | India hike | India change |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pro, 256GB | +$100 | 9.1% | +₹30,000 | 22.2% |
| Pro Max, 256GB | +$100 | 8.3% | +₹30,000 | 20.0% |
EU tickets rose €150 and UK tickets £100. China added CNY 1,000 and Japan JPY 40,000. Tarun Pathak, research director at Counterpoint Research, said Indian iPhone increases are averaging 20 to 30 percent against a global hike of 8 to 10 percent, and he tied the spike to a weaker rupee and higher domestic production costs as well as the memory squeeze.
Apple also lifted older India prices on the same day. The iPhone 17 256GB is now ₹99,900, up 20.5 percent from ₹82,900. Pathak said those steeper-than-anticipated hikes shift attention back to the iPhone 17 and older models, which have also become more expensive, and that channel checks show some buyers moved early while others are hanging back ahead of festive sales.
At ₹95 to the dollar, the US Pro converts to ₹1,13,905 and the India list sits ₹50,995, or 45%, above that figure. The Pro Max gap is ₹56,495, about 46 percent. The Duo’s gap is ₹1,09,995, about 58 percent, the widest of the new phones.
How GST and Sales Tax Skew the Ranking
The cheapest-country charts treat every sticker as the same kind of number. They are not. US Apple pages quote a pre-tax list; California or New York then add local sales tax at the till, and a handful of states add nothing. India’s ₹1,64,900 already contains 18% GST on smartphones under HSN 8517. UK and German Apple prices include VAT, so the euro and pound tickets are closer to what leaves a card than the dollar ticket is.
Strip 18 percent GST out of the India Pro and the pre-tax residue is still about ₹1,39,746, which is ₹25,841 above the converted $1,199. Add an 8 percent US sales tax to that dollar price and the American out-the-door figure is still well below the India MRP. The ranking does not flip. It just stops being a 45-point blowout caused by Apple alone.
Greg Joswiak, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing, framed the phones as a camera, battery and chip jump, not a tax story.
With iPhone 18 Pro, we’ve made advancements to the areas our users care about most: camera, performance, battery, and intelligence.
Greg Joswiak, senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing, Apple
US buyers can spread $1,199 over 24 months at $49.95, or lease from $34.99 a month on Apple Upgrade. Trade-in credit runs $175 to $885 on an iPhone 13 or later, and up to $1,200 on an iPhone 14 or later toward a Pro. Those offers sit on top of a tax-exclusive list. India’s EMI math starts from a GST-inclusive MRP.
Tamil Nadu Phones, American Day-One Sales
Counterpoint Research puts India’s share of global iPhone output at 26 percent in 2026, up from 6 percent four years earlier. Foxconn’s lines at Sriperumbudur and near Bengaluru, and Tata Electronics at Hosur, are the plants behind that share. Vendor figures submitted to the government for the five-year production-linked incentive window put Tata’s iPhone export value at $26.3 billion against Foxconn’s $25.6 billion, with Foxconn still ahead on combined domestic-plus-export output.
That build-out was sold, in political speeches and in retail chatter, as the thing that would finally pull Indian shelf prices toward US ones. The September lists go the other way. Local value addition is still thin. Vinod Sharma, who chairs the Confederation of Indian Industry’s electronics manufacturing committee, put it at 15 to 20 percent in April 2026. Pankaj Mohindroo of the India Cellular and Electronics Association puts Indian mobile value addition at 18 to 20 percent against 38 to 40 percent in China. Ajay Srivastava of the Global Trade Research Initiative has estimated assembly at about $30 on a phone that retails near $1,000. Displays, camera modules, memory and TSMC’s 2-nanometre A20 Pro still arrive in a crate.
THE INDIA BUILD VERSUS THE INDIA BILL
- World share: Counterpoint says India will make 26 percent of iPhones in 2026, up from 6 percent four years ago.
- Mix, not volume: Pathak sees Pro-series share of Apple’s India portfolio rising from 11 percent in 2025 to 15 percent by the end of 2026.
- Revenue up, units down: Counterpoint expects Apple’s India revenue to grow 6 to 7 percent in 2026 while shipments fall in the low single digits.
- Last year’s base: IDC counted 14.3 million iPhones shipped in India in 2025.
January-July shipments were up 2 percent, Pathak said, while the Pro series grew 32 percent. Prabhu Ram, head of the Industry Intelligence Group at CyberMedia Research, said Apple has not fully absorbed DRAM and NAND inflation on the Pro tier and that the 20 to 22 percent India increase is a partial pass-through of higher memory and process-node costs. CMR still expects the 18 Pro and Pro Max to take about 8 percent and 5 percent of launch-quarter shipments. The factory story is an export story. The bill at an Indian Apple Store is a tax, currency and mix story.
A 20% Duty Sits on the First Foldable
The iPhone Duo is the phone that makes the split obvious, because the first units will not come off those Tamil Nadu lines. Pathak said initial Duo units are expected to attract a 20% import duty because they will not be locally assembled. India’s commercial tariff on smartphones still starts with a 20 percent basic customs duty before GST. That is on top of a $1,999 US list that already sits in a different league from the Pro.
Overall, we believe that the iPhone Duo is set to expand India’s foldable segment by value rather than volume initially and bring the spotlight on the foldable segment.
Tarun Pathak, research director, Counterpoint Research
Pathak also said value growth from the Duo and a richer Pro mix is the point of the year, not a flood of cheap units. CMR expects the Duo to take around 24 percent of India’s foldable market in its launch quarter. Analysts put first-year Duo sales around 200,000. Counterpoint and IDC see India’s foldable shipments reaching 1.2 million units in 2027. None of those forecasts require the Duo to be cheap.
IPHONE DUO INDIA STORAGE LADDER
- 256GB: ₹2,99,900, which is ₹1,35,000 above the base iPhone 18 Pro.
- 512GB: ₹3,24,900.
- 1TB: ₹3,74,900.
- 2TB: ₹4,49,900, a ₹1,50,000 step, or 50 percent, above the 256GB Duo.
The same 2TB Pro Max is ₹3,29,900. Buyers who want Apple’s first foldable are not shopping the Pro Max for a discount; they are paying for a hinge and two screens, then paying again for the fact that this one is an import.
Carrying a US iPhone Through Indian Customs
The cheapest-country posts imply a workaround: buy in the US, or in the UAE at AED 5,099 for the Pro, and fly home. Baggage rules do not read those posts. Returning residents get a combined goods allowance of ₹75,000. One phone that is clearly in personal use, unboxed and activated, often fits. A sealed, unused box is the kind of thing customs treats as a commercial import, and commercial smartphone imports still face that 20 percent basic duty plus GST.
WHAT A CROSS-BORDER BUY ACTUALLY FACES
- The allowance: ₹75,000 covers combined goods, not an unlimited flagship.
- The box: A factory-sealed phone is the exhibit most likely to be assessed as stock, not as a used handset.
- The network: US and Puerto Rico iPhone 18 Pro and Duo units have no physical SIM tray and activate on eSIM only, which is a hassle for some Indian prepaid plans rather than a deal-breaker.
- The warranty path: Service is cleaner on a unit bought through Apple India or an authorised reseller than on a grey-market IMEI that landed in a suitcase.
Local assembly was supposed to make that flight unnecessary. It made the opposite trip more common: phones leaving Hosur and Sriperumbudur for US shelves, while Indian buyers stare at a 22.2 percent Pro hike and a foldable that still clears customs as an import. Pre-orders for the Pro phones open at 5:30 p.m. IST on September 12. The Duo’s window opens October 16. The US list will still be the one that looks cheap on a converted spreadsheet.
