Gears of War E-Day Proves Xbox Fans Will Pay, Just Not $70

Gears of War E-Day sold an estimated 230,000 copies, but 722,000 Game Pass players paid $30, leaving the full-price Xbox copy almost unused.

230,000 copies. That is Alinea Analytics’ estimate for Gears of War: E-Day from early access on October 1 through the first days after the October 6 launch, and it is the number most people are arguing about. Steam took 168,000 of those copies. Xbox, console and PC together, took 62,000.

The money did not follow the copies. Alinea, in an October 9 note by Rhys Elliott, put revenue at about $37 million, with Xbox taking about $26 million and Steam about $11 million, because 722,000 Game Pass players paid $30 for a five-day head start they would not own.

230,000 Copies Hide Almost 950,000 Buyers

Elliott called E-Day the best-reviewed Gears game in nearly two decades and still labelled the result soft for a flagship. OpenCritic’s page on the game shows a top critic average of 87, with 92% of 93 critics recommending it, so the critical case is not the dispute. The dispute is what Xbox counted as a sale on its own store.

Alinea’s Xbox slice includes Game Pass. About 1.7 million people opened E-Day through the subscription rather than a copy. Of that group, 722,000 bought the Premium Edition upgrade. Add those upgrades to the 230,000 copies and you get 952,000 people who paid something, which Elliott rounded to nearly 950,000.

That is why a Steam-heavy copy count still left Xbox with almost three-quarters of the estimated cash. The home platform sold the fewest boxed copies and took most of the revenue by charging less per person.

ALINEA’S PAID MIX, OCTOBER 9

Platform Copies sold Other paid access Est. revenue
Steam 168,000 None in this split About $11 million
Xbox (console and PC) 62,000 722,000 Game Pass upgrades at $30 About $26 million
Total 230,000 722,000 upgrades About $37 million

Game Pass access of 1.7 million sits beside that table, not inside the copy column. Roughly 42% of those subscribers paid the extra $30. The rest played on the monthly fee.

Twelve Upgrades for Every Xbox Copy

The Xbox math is blunt. Alinea counted 62,000 Xbox copies against 722,000 Premium upgrades, or nearly 12 upgrades for every copy. Elliott wrote that the $70 full-price SKU is functionally dead on Xbox, using $70 as a round stand-in for the paid copy. The Xbox store’s Standard Edition listed at $69.99, with Premium at $99.99 and the upgrade at $30.

Studio head Mike Crump said early access began on October 1 at 8:00 a.m. PT for Premium Edition players and for Game Pass subscribers who bought the upgrade. The game went worldwide at the same hour on October 6, on Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC, and Steam, and it was live on Steam the same morning for anyone who paid for Premium.

WHAT $30 ACTUALLY BOUGHT

  • Standard Edition: $69.99, full game on October 6, the SKU Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass also unlock that day.
  • Premium Edition: $99.99, up to five days early, the Bravo Squad Signature Weapon Pack, five seasonal customization packs, and 1,000 Iron.
  • Premium upgrade: $30 for Standard owners and Game Pass players, the same extras without a copy they keep if the subscription lapses.
  • The window: Alinea said another 250,000 early-access upgrades moved between the October 1 review drop and the October 6 launch, a five-day burst, not a second total on top of 722,000.

Those 722,000 upgrades brought in about $21.7 million. Elliott’s point is that Xbox can rarely see what a Game Pass player would have paid, because the game is already in the app. Here, 722,000 people spent real money for five days of a title they still did not own.

Xbox Already Pulled Call of Duty off Day One

This is the part that makes the Gears result sting. On April 21, Team Xbox cut Game Pass Ultimate from $29.99 a month to $22.99 and PC Game Pass from $16.49 to $13.99, and it said future Call of Duty games will not join Game Pass at launch. New CoD titles move to the following holiday season, about a year later. Existing CoD games stay in the library. Major day-one releases, the post said, continue.

E-Day was one of those day-one releases. Xbox had already decided a giant shooter should sell at full price first. It then ran the old model on its own Gears prequel, a game built in Unreal Engine 5 as an origin story set 14 years before the first Gears of War, with Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago, Horde Siege, and Versus.

THE POLICY CALENDAR NEXT TO THE LAUNCH

  1. April 21, 2026: Game Pass Ultimate falls to $22.99 a month; future Call of Duty games leave day-one Game Pass.
  2. October 1, 2026: E-Day early access opens at 8:00 a.m. PT for Premium and for Game Pass players who paid $30.
  3. October 6, 2026: Worldwide launch at 8:00 a.m. PT; Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass unlock the Standard Edition.
  4. October 9, 2026: Alinea publishes the 230,000-copy estimate and the 722,000-upgrade count.

Elliott’s counterfactual sits on that calendar. If three quarters of the 722,000, mostly in the US and Europe, had bought E-Day outright at $70, Alinea put that pile at nearly $40 million. They paid $30 instead. Xbox still has the monthly Game Pass fees, and E-Day is filling evenings for hundreds of thousands of subscribers. The service, Elliott wrote, is no longer growing, so the company is chasing more money per user, not more users.

Why Steam Players Last Longer

Playtime is where the subscription shows up as tourism. Alinea’s distribution has 54% of Xbox E-Day players at five hours or less, against 32% on Steam. On the long side, 19% of Xbox players passed 15 hours, against 33% on Steam, and 14% of Xbox players passed 20 hours, against 22% on Steam.

The absolute crowds over 15, 20, and 50 hours are still larger on Xbox, because 1.7 million people walked in through Game Pass. The mix is different. When a game is free to try, people try it and leave. Alinea put 17% of Xbox players under one hour, against 6% on Steam.

PLAYTIME SPLIT, ALINEA

  • Five hours or less: 54% of Xbox players, 32% of Steam players.
  • Over 15 hours: 19% on Xbox, 33% on Steam.
  • Over 20 hours: 14% on Xbox, 22% on Steam.
  • Under one hour: 17% on Xbox, 6% on Steam; Forza Horizon 6 showed the same pattern, 11% on Xbox against 2% on Steam.

Elliott said that bounce is normal on subscription titles, including on PlayStation’s service. It is not a verdict on the campaign. It is what happens when the storefront invites a look. Steam’s 168,000 buyers skipped that invitation and, on average, stayed.

Fortnite, Roblox, and the Game Pass Tourists

The Xbox crowd is mostly a Gears crowd already. Alinea found that 86% of Xbox E-Day players had played Gears 5 and 76% had played Gears 4. Franchise memory is not the problem. Getting that memory to pay $69.99 on Xbox is the problem.

What else those Xbox players ran this month is a Game Pass menu as much as a taste test: Fortnite at 16%, Roblox at 7%, Call of Duty at 6%, and Minecraft Dungeons II at 5%, the last of those also on Game Pass and a few days earlier. Plenty of subscribers sample whatever just landed.

Steam’s overlap is a shooter list without that skew. Wardogs sat at 13%, Deadlock at 12%, and CS2 at 10%, with Helldivers 2 and Space Marine 2 further down among the co-op PvE players who will like Horde Siege. That is a group that paid to be there and then hopped between other paid shooters.

Online argument has mostly ignored that split and locked onto 230,000 copies as a fail state, treating the 1.7 million Game Pass opens as a public-relations patch. The upgrade figure cuts against that. Hundreds of thousands of Xbox players still spent money. They spent it on a ticket, not a copy, because the store sold them a ticket.

The Coalition Shipped a Hit Xbox Priced at $30

The Coalition cannot change that price board. Crump’s launch note thanked fans and pointed them at Emergence Day, Horde Siege classes, and a 4K, 60fps Unreal Engine 5 build. The studio’s job was the game. The store’s job was the SKU mix.

Today is a moment we’ve been looking forward to for a long time. On behalf of everyone at The Coalition, thank you to the fans who have followed us on this journey. We can’t wait for you to experience Emergence Day for yourselves.

Mike Crump, Studio Head, The Coalition, Xbox Wire

Crump later told interviewers the team is measuring whether E-Day shows off the hardware, and that the next Gears game will not take nearly as long to make. He has also called the series a natural Xbox exclusive. That does not answer Elliott’s ledger. Xbox copies at 62,000 against 722,000 upgrades is a storefront result, and it is the result Xbox already refused to keep repeating on Call of Duty.

Alinea’s closing questions are the ones the copy count cannot answer. Will Xbox keep funding Gears at this return, and if it does, does the next one sit out day-one Game Pass, the way new CoD now does? The 722,000 people who paid $30 already said they would spend. Xbox collected the smaller cheque.

Microsoft has not published its own sales or Game Pass totals for E-Day. Until it does, the working figures remain Alinea’s October 9 estimates: 230,000 copies, 1.7 million Game Pass players, 722,000 paid upgrades, and about $37 million, most of it from a $30 ticket on the platform that used to sell this series at full price.
