Hansal Mehta, the filmmaker known for gripping narratives like Shahid and Scam 1992: The Harshad Mehta Story, is set to bring another ambitious project to life. His upcoming web series, Gandhi, featuring Pratik Gandhi in the lead role, promises a fresh perspective on the life of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. In a recent interview, Mehta shared insights into his vision for the series, emphasizing the importance of portraying Gandhi as a nuanced, multi-dimensional figure rather than an untouchable icon.
A New Take on Gandhi’s Story
Mehta has never shied away from presenting complex protagonists, and Gandhi is no exception. Speaking with Mid-Day, he explained that biographical projects often end up glorifying their subjects to the point of losing relatability. His approach? A grounded, human-centered portrayal.
“When we make films on real people, they often become hagiographies. But [my] attempt is to create a well-rounded character. I did it with Scam 1992 and you’ll see that with Gandhi also,” he said.
This philosophy drives the project, ensuring that audiences see not just Gandhi’s virtues but also his struggles, contradictions, and evolution as a leader.
Humanizing a Historical Icon
Mehta believes that the key to audience engagement lies in showing the humanity of historical figures. He stressed that an overly sanitized version of any character fails to make an impact.
- “The idea is to humanize your characters,” Mehta explained.
- “You will not feel for the character if you don’t see him as a whole, with his goodness and flaws, his failings and successes.”
This approach aligns with Mehta’s past work, where characters are portrayed with depth and realism. With Scam 1992, he turned a controversial stockbroker into an intriguing, layered character. With Gandhi, he aims to do the same—presenting a leader who was both revered and criticized, a figure shaped by his triumphs and mistakes.
AR Rahman Joins the Project
The series also boasts a significant collaboration—Oscar-winning composer A.R. Rahman has been roped in to work on the music. The announcement came on Gandhi Jayanti in 2024, with Mehta sharing the news via Instagram:
“Maestro A.R. Rahman joins Team Gandhi! On the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti, we remember the Mahatma and are thrilled to announce this very special collaboration!”
Rahman’s involvement suggests that music will play a crucial role in shaping the emotional landscape of the series, adding depth to the narrative. Given Rahman’s track record of blending traditional and modern sounds, audiences can expect a powerful score that complements the storytelling.
An International Ensemble Cast
Apart from Pratik Gandhi, who has earned widespread acclaim for his performances, the series features a diverse international cast. Pratik’s wife, Bhamini Oza, steps into the role of Kasturba Gandhi. The lineup also includes actors like Tom Felton, Libby Mai, Lindon Alexander, Jonno Davies, and Simon Lennon.
Such a mix of talent hints at a global approach to Gandhi’s story, possibly covering aspects of his influence beyond India. Whether it’s his time in South Africa or his interactions with British authorities, the series could explore lesser-known facets of his life.
When and Where to Watch
The project wrapped up filming in August 2024 and is currently in post-production. While an exact release date hasn’t been announced yet, the series is expected to stream on a major platform soon.
With Mehta at the helm, a strong lead performance by Pratik Gandhi, and A.R. Rahman’s musical touch, Gandhi is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated releases in the streaming space. If Mehta’s track record is anything to go by, this series will not just recount history but bring it alive in a way that resonates with contemporary audiences.
