Ternus Stakes His First iPhone on a $1,999 Fold

John Ternus priced the iPhone Duo at $1,999 in his CEO debut, chasing 6 million units in a foldable market still near 2 percent.

Apple priced the iPhone Duo at $1,999 on September 9. It is a book-style foldable that new chief executive John Ternus put on a recorded Cupertino stage eight days after taking the job.

Pre-orders open at 5 a.m. PT on October 16. Stores get it on October 23. The wager is that a titanium iPhone that opens into a 7.6-inch inner screen can make foldables a real Apple business, in a category that Counterpoint Research still puts at about 2 percent of global phone shipments.

Ternus Bets His First Event on a $1,999 Fold

Ternus joined Apple’s product design team in 2001, became vice president of Hardware Engineering in 2013, and joined the executive team as senior vice president in 2021. The board named him chief executive on April 20, with the handoff set for September 1, while Tim Cook moved to executive chairman after 15 years in the top job.

Cook, in that April note, said Ternus “has the mind of an engineer, the soul of an innovator, and the heart to lead with integrity and with honor.” Ternus has worked on iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, and AirPods. His first public act as CEO was a 75-minute recorded product show, not a live Steve Jobs theater night, and the foldable sat at the center of it.

iPhone Duo is the most transformational change to iPhone since the original. With an entirely new design and intuitive experiences, it shows what’s possible when hardware and software are engineered together and redefines what it means to use a foldable phone.

He also told the room that other foldables “just feel like two phones awkwardly stuck together.” The Apple pitch is that hardware and iOS 27 were built as one piece, which is the most transformational change to iPhone he is willing to claim on day eight.

Cook’s own run took Apple from about $350 billion in market value to $4 trillion, and from $108 billion in fiscal 2011 revenue to more than $416 billion in fiscal 2025, with more than 2.5 billion active devices. Ternus inherits that machine and a phone that starts $800 above the new iPhone 18 Pro.

THE SUCCESSION CLOCK

  1. April 20, 2026: Apple names Ternus as next chief executive and Cook as executive chairman, effective September 1.
  2. September 1, 2026: Ternus takes the job after 25 years at the company; Johny Srouji becomes chief hardware officer.
  3. September 9, 2026: Ternus introduces iPhone Duo in a recorded event at Apple’s Cupertino headquarters.
  4. October 16, 2026: Pre-orders begin at 5 a.m. PT in the United States and a long list of other markets.
  5. October 23, 2026: First units go on sale; 28 additional countries and regions follow on October 30.

The calendar is tight on purpose. The hardware chief who spent a career shipping iPhones now has to sell a $1,999 one before his first quarter as CEO is even over.

The Inner Screen Is 50 Percent Larger Than a Pro Max

Closed, Duo is meant to sit in a pocket like a passport, with a 5.4-inch Super Retina XDR cover that Apple says holds 90 percent of the screen area of iPhone 18 Pro. Open, the 7.6-inch inner panel is 50 percent larger than iPhone 18 Pro Max, the largest display Apple has put on an iPhone.

Both panels share the same aspect ratio, so apps are supposed to scale without the usual foldable jolt. They run ProMotion, Always On, and 3,000 nits peak outdoor brightness. The inner stack uses 10 ultrathin layers and a nano-texture finish that Apple says cuts glare and makes the crease less obvious. A FaceTime camera sits under that glass and stays hidden until a call needs it.

THE DUO AT A GLANCE

  • Starting price: $1,999 for 256GB, then 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB, in star white or night sky.
  • Chip and cooling: A20 Pro with a vapor chamber, a dual 16-core Neural Engine, up to 20 percent faster 6-core CPU than A19 Pro, and up to 50 percent more memory bandwidth.
  • Battery claim: Dual cells, with up to 44 hours of video on the outer display and up to 31 hours on the inner display.
  • Cameras: 48MP Fusion Main and 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide on the back, plus a 12MP Center Stage cover camera and the under-display inner camera.

The frame is grade 5 titanium with a mirror polish. The hinge cover is 3D-printed titanium with a micro-blasted finish. Touch ID sits in the side button, and an Apple Watch can unlock the phone. There is no Action button. Camera Control is still there, including a Siri Camera mode that lets Siri see what the lens sees.

Apple will sell a $79 Duo Case in navy blue and sand, and a $129 Duo Folio with Kickstand in navy blue and taupe. Monthly math on the base phone is $83.29 for 24 months, or a $57.99 lease through Apple Upgrade. Later this year the inner and outer glass are due to take an Apple Pencil with USB-C.

On the same day, Apple set iPhone 18 Pro at $1,199 and iPhone 18 Pro Max at $1,299, both with 256GB as the floor and a 2TB option for the first time. Those slab phones pre-order on September 12 and go on sale September 18, a full month before Duo. The foldable is the expensive extra, not the default upgrade path.

6 Million Units Is the Ceiling for 2026

Foldables have been on sale since 2019. Counterpoint puts last year’s global shipments at nearly 20 million, still about 2 percent of all smartphones, and says lifetime volume should pass 100 million by the end of 2026. That is eight years of work for a slice of the market that is still a rounding error in Apple’s iPhone business.

The firm’s August forecast, published September 7, gives Apple up to 6 million foldable iPhone shipments in 2026. That would be 25 percent of the category and second place, behind Samsung at 38 percent and ahead of Huawei at 22 percent, even with a selling window that starts in late October.

2026 FOLDABLE SHARE FORECAST

Brand 2026 share (forecast) What Counterpoint flags
Samsung 38% Still first, on the Galaxy Z Fold 8 series
Apple 25% Up to 6 million units, supply-capped
Huawei 22% Strong in China, including wider book designs

Associate Director Liz Lee said the 6 million ceiling is a factory limit, not a demand call. “Initial supply for Apple’s first foldable iPhone will inevitably be limited during the early production ramp, which keeps the upper end of our 2026 shipment forecast at 6 million units,” she said. “Even with the short selling window, we still expect Apple to take 25 percent of the global foldable market and directly move into the No. 2 position.”

For 2027, Counterpoint has Apple more than doubling those shipments and reaching about 40 percent share, with the whole foldable market up 37 percent. Research Director Tarun Pathak said Apple will heat up the premium end, then added that foldables remain “a very small part of the overall smartphone market.” The same note says foldable prices are still about three times a normal slab phone, and that mass-market use is “still some years away.”

That is the bet in one line. Ternus is not launching into a booming category. He is launching into a small, expensive one, and Apple’s own first-year volume is capped by how fast the line can run.

A $1,899 Fold Has Been on Sale Since August

Samsung announced the Galaxy Z Fold 8 on July 22 and put it on sale August 7. The U.S. sticker is $1,899 for 12GB and 256GB, $2,099 for 512GB, and $2,499 for 16GB and 1TB. The inner panel is also 7.6 inches, on a wider 4:3 book, with a 5.5-inch cover.

Samsung’s U.S. product page calls it the lightest Fold yet at 201 grams, 4.5 mm thick unfolded, with Flex Titanium in the display and a 4,800 mAh pack rated up to 26 hours of video. Water protection is IP48. Duo’s advantage on paper is IP68, titanium instead of aluminum, and iOS. Its problem on paper is the extra $100 at the base, plus a body that early spec sheets list as thicker and heavier than the phone already in stores.

WHAT $1,999 BUYS AGAINST THE SHELF

Phone U.S. starting price Main display Water rating
iPhone Duo (256GB) $1,999 7.6-inch foldable inner, 5.4-inch cover IP68
Galaxy Z Fold 8 (256GB) $1,899 7.6-inch foldable inner, 5.5-inch cover IP48
iPhone 18 Pro Max (256GB) $1,299 Slab; Duo’s inner glass is 50% larger Not a foldable

The arithmetic is blunt. Duo costs $100 more than the Fold 8 and $700 more than the new Pro Max. The 256GB floor is what people latched onto within hours of the price going up, because $1,999 used to be the far edge of an iPhone ticket, not the starting gate.

The louder problem is that 256GB configuration. It keeps foldables where they have been: a luxury second phone, not a replacement for the slab that Apple still sells by the hundreds of millions. A wider Fold 8 is already in pockets, and it is the cheaper book if the buyer only wants a big inner screen.

Two Apps at Once, and a Place for Siri AI

The hardware only pays off if iOS uses the extra glass. When Duo is open, iOS 27 puts two Home Screen pages side by side, with Today View widgets on the left. Lock Screen controls, the Dock, and app chrome move to the side so the tall space stays for content. Split View lets two apps run at once, the thing Apple has sold on iPad for years and is now putting in a pocket.

The Dynamic Island is redrawn as a vertical strip. Sheets and buttons are told to slide off the fold. Apple says Netflix, Zoom, and Slack are already using the open layout. Developers got Device Hub in Xcode to flip, fold, and rotate a simulator through those poses.

Ternus spent part of the same show on Apple Intelligence and Siri AI, and called iPhones a “personal intelligent hub.” The inner canvas is the tell. Document work, two-app layouts, and a large Siri window are the jobs a 6.9-inch slab still fights. Duo is the phone Apple built when it decided those jobs need a desk.

TRICKS THE SECOND SCREEN UNLOCKS

  • Smart Take: On-device models watch the scene and fire the shutter when people are posing, so the photographer can be in the frame.
  • Duo Preview: The cover screen shows a live view so subjects can check framing while the rear 48MP cameras shoot.
  • Kid Cue: Peanuts animations play on the outer display to pull a child’s eyes to the lens.
  • Duo FaceTime: Someone standing with the user can join the same call on the cover screen instead of crowding one panel.

The rear cameras can record 4K at 120 fps in Dolby Vision. Users can prop the book open for time-lapse without a tripod. Those are the fun demos. The business case is still Split View and Siri on 7.6 inches of glass, sold to people who already pay Pro Max money and want a tablet that rings.

The Hinge Has 100 Parts and No Cycle Number

Apple built the hinge from more than 100 components, with magnets for a tight close and support ribs that hold the inner panel flat. Ceramic Shield covers the back. Ceramic Shield 2 on the outer glass is rated for 3 times better scratch resistance than the prior generation. The inner cover is a custom polymer Apple says is up to 40 percent stiffer than other foldable materials, over high-strength glass, with adhesives that are supposed to glide like pages in a book.

IP68 is the line that will get used in stores, because the Fold 8 is IP48. What Apple did not put in the newsroom note is a hinge cycle rating, the figure Samsung-style foldables have used for years, or a measurement of the crease. The copy says the nano-texture “minimizes” the crease. It does not say the crease is gone.

WHAT WE KNOW

  • Published build: Grade 5 titanium frame, 3D-printed titanium hinge cover, IP68, Ceramic Shield front and back, 100-plus hinge parts.
  • Published displays: 7.6-inch inner and 5.4-inch outer, same aspect ratio, 3,000 nits peak, under-display inner camera.
  • Published sale window: Pre-order October 16, first sale October 23, more countries October 30.

WHAT IS UNCONFIRMED

  • Hinge life: No official fold-cycle number, so durability is a claim until units are in pockets.
  • Crease: Apple says it is minimized, not measured, and not eliminated.
  • First-year volume: Counterpoint’s 6 million figure is a ceiling tied to supply, not an Apple target.

Launch photos that stretch a hand across the closed book did not help the one-handed pitch. The cover is passport-wide on purpose. People who want a small phone still have iPhone 18 Pro, at $1,199, on sale a month earlier.

Ternus now has to prove a $1,999 iPhone can move a 2 percent category without starving his own Pro Max line, and without asking buyers to wait through a supply ramp that Counterpoint already called inevitable. Pre-orders open October 16. The hinge will start collecting the cycle count Apple would not print.
