iPhone Duo’s India Debut Resets Prices More Than Foldables
Apple’s first foldable starts at ₹2,99,900 in India, 58% over the US list, a halo SKU that lifts iPhone prices while Samsung keeps the category.
Apple listed the iPhone Duo at ₹2,99,900 in India, about ₹1.10 lakh above the $1,999 (about ₹1.90 lakh) US starting price. That 58% premium is the first number buyers saw after the September 9 launch, and it is already doing more work than the hinge.
The foldable is a new halo SKU above the iPhone 18 Pro line, which itself jumped in India the same night. Official shops now have to sell a ₹3 lakh phone against cheaper Samsung foldables and against the same Duo sitting in Dubai at AED 8,499 (about ₹2.20 lakh).
A ₹1.1 Lakh Gap on the Same Phone
On Apple’s India site the 256GB Duo starts at ₹2,99,900 in India, with 512GB at ₹3,24,900, 1TB at ₹3,74,900 and 2TB at ₹4,49,900. Pre-orders open at 5:30 p.m. IST on October 16. Stores get the phone on October 23.
The US list for those four sizes is $1,999, $2,199, $2,599 and $3,199, before state sales tax. At about ₹95 to the dollar, the base US phone converts to about ₹1.90 lakh, which is why the India tag sits ₹1.10 lakh higher. The UAE 256GB price is AED 8,499, about ₹2.20 lakh, still well under the India MRP.
DUO 256GB ACROSS MARKETS
| Market | Local list | About in rupees |
|---|---|---|
| United States | $1,999 | ₹1.90 lakh |
| UAE | AED 8,499 | ₹2.20 lakh |
| India | ₹2,99,900 | ₹2.99 lakh |
Apple’s India page also prices a six-month plan at ₹48,817 a month, which is the full Duo, not the step up from a Pro Max. The hardware is the first foldable iPhone: a 7.6-inch inner Super Retina XDR display, a 5.4-inch outer display, a titanium frame, the A20 Pro chip, a dual-battery pack and Star White or Night Sky finishes. Apple says the inner screen is 50% larger than the iPhone 18 Pro Max and the outer screen has more than 90% of the 18 Pro’s screen area. Peak brightness is listed at 3,000 nits. Lab notes on the product put it at IP68, 6 metres for 30 minutes.
iPhone 18 Pro Prices Jumped ₹30,000 at Launch
The Duo did not arrive alone. The iPhone 18 Pro starts at ₹1,64,900 for 256GB in India, ₹30,000 above the iPhone 17 Pro’s ₹1,34,900 launch price. The iPhone 18 Pro Max starts at ₹1,79,900. Those two phones go on sale on September 18 after pre-orders that opened on September 12.
Against US lists of $1,199 and $1,299, the India Pro and Pro Max tags sit about 45% higher, using the same ₹95 rate. Existing iPhones moved the same day. The lower-storage iPhone 17 is now ₹99,900, up nearly 21%. The iPhone Air 1TB is ₹2,24,900, up 41%.
Former CEO Tim Cook had already said the firm would raise prices to offset memory and storage chip costs. “Unfortunately, price increases are unavoidable,” he said in June. “We are doing our best to mitigate the huge increases that are being passed on to us, and we’ve been trying to shield our customers from the increases, but the situation has become unsustainable.”
Prabhu Ram, vice president of industry research at CyberMedia Research, tied the Pro increase to that chip squeeze. He said Apple had chosen not to fully absorb component inflation on the Pro tier, and called the 20-22% Pro rise steeper than recent generations. The Duo sits ₹1,20,000 above the 18 Pro Max. Ram put that step at roughly ₹20,000 a month for a buyer stretching the gap on a six-month plan.
Why Official Retailers Fear October
Kailash Lakhyani, founder and chairman of the All India Mobile Retailers Association, which represents 1.5 lakh mobile retailers, said the Duo’s cost will hit volume. He also said the gap is already steering buyers toward Samsung, and that grey-market imports with global warranties will likely flood in once sales start in October if Apple does not cut the launch price or add offers.
This sharp price gap is pushing prospective buyers toward Samsung. Additionally, if international prices remain this low, grey-market imports with global warranties will likely flood the market when sales commence in October. If Apple India cannot lower the launch price immediately, it should introduce aggressive consumer offers to narrow this gap.

The arithmetic behind that warning is simple enough that people are already running it in public. Paying the US list and a card forex markup still lands under the India MRP, which is why a suitcase from Dubai or a grey invoice with a global warranty looks rational before a single official unit is sold. That is a channel problem, not a software problem.
Tarun Pathak, research director at Counterpoint India, said the first Duo units will not be Made in India for some time, so they take the full import stack. He put the combined hit at more than 40%, counting about 17% import duty, 18% GST and 5-6% forex. Apple has not published its own split. What is not in dispute is that locally assembled iPhones do not carry the same finished-goods duty the first Duo shipment will.
WHAT PUSHES THE INDIA TAG UP
- Import status: Early Duo stock is imported as a finished phone, so it takes the full duty stack that assembled iPhones partly avoid.
- GST: Smartphones attract 18% GST on the duty-paid value, which compounds the import charge rather than replacing it.
- Rupee and chips: A weaker rupee and higher DRAM and NAND costs hit India harder than the US list, which Cook had already flagged.
- No launch cut: Lakhyani said that without a lower MRP or heavy offers, official stores, Apple Exclusive Stores and large-format retail lose the sale to grey stock.
He later warned that legitimate retailers and the tax base take the loss if the gap holds, after what he called 15 years of building Apple’s India retail network. That is the stake for shops that cannot match a Dubai sticker.
Samsung’s 89% Hold on India’s Foldables
India’s foldable market is still tiny. Pathak said foldables are about 2% of global smartphones and less than 1% in India. Shipments were 630,000 in 2025, with Counterpoint and IDC putting 2027 volume at 1.2 million units and net annual sales at $2.2 billion, up from $1.1 billion in 2025.
INDIA FOLDABLE SNAPSHOT
- 2025 volume: 630,000 foldable phones shipped, against a much larger conventional smartphone market.
- 2027 outlook: 1.2 million units and $2.2 billion in annual sales, per Counterpoint and IDC figures released on September 6.
- Samsung’s share: 89% of India foldable shipments in 2026, up from 88% in 2025, with Motorola at 8%.
- Apple this year: Counterpoint analyst Shubham Singh put Apple’s India foldable installed base below 1% in 2026 because the Duo arrives late in the year.
Samsung already sells three current foldables under those shares. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra starts at ₹1,99,999, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 at ₹1,79,999 and the Galaxy Z Flip 8 at ₹1,24,999. The Duo’s 256GB tag is about ₹1 lakh above the Fold 8 Ultra. Samsung also launched with bank discounts, upgrade bonuses and EMI tenors up to 30 months, which is how it has kept a category that Apple is only now entering.
Upasana Joshi of IDC India said Samsung’s spread across book and flip models strengthens that lead for now, and that Apple’s pricing keeps the Duo in a super-premium pocket at the start. Pathak has said the category is unlikely to turn mass for another three to four years, with an installed base around 30 lakh foldables against more than 74 crore smartphone users.
The Screen Inside Duo Comes From Samsung
Even a Duo that sells still pays a Korean supplier. Industry tracker OLED-Info, citing Korean reports in June, said Samsung Display had begun mass production of foldable OLED panels for Apple’s first foldable, with cells made at Asan in Korea and modules built in Vietnam. It said Apple’s first order was 3 million displays for 2026 and that Samsung Display is the exclusive supplier of foldable panels under a three-year deal.
A later Weibo leak put a $250 inner-panel price on that deal. Apple has not confirmed a dollar figure, so that number stays off the ledger. The supply fact is enough: Samsung keeps 89% of India’s foldable shipments and, on the reports above, also builds the screen inside the phone meant to challenge that lead.
That is why a slow Duo ramp in India does not automatically hurt the company that already owns the shops, the service network and the panel line. A hot ramp still sends display orders to Asan. The loser in the near term is the official India channel that has to clear ₹2,99,900 tickets against both.
A Halo Phone Above the Pro Line
Ram said Apple is using the Duo to lock in a new ultra-premium tier above the Pro lineup and to convert pent-up demand among iPhone loyalists and early adopters. He also said India pricing reflects DRAM and NAND cost pressure, rupee depreciation, customs, taxes and channel economics, and that at this tag the Duo is more likely to lift average selling price across the portfolio than to drive near-term volume.
At this price point, the Duo is more likely to operate more as a halo product driving portfolio-wide increase in average selling price, rather than a near-term volume driver.
Prabhu Ram, vice president, Industry Research Group, CyberMedia Research
Pathak is more bullish on what Apple does to the category’s terms. He said Apple brings a large group of premium iPhone users and that the fight will move from thickness, hinges, crease and durability toward software, multitasking, AI and the wider Apple setup. “The true differentiator will lie in the user experience, which will help drive category expansion,” he said.
Apple is selling that line hard. CEO John Ternus called the Duo the most transformational change to iPhone since the original, and said hardware and software engineered together redefine what a foldable phone is for. The India site pitches Split View, Siri AI on a larger canvas, hands-free FaceTime, a 48MP Dual Fusion camera set, an under-display FaceTime camera and iOS 27 poses that stand the phone like a mini laptop. It is eSIM-only, with Apple naming Airtel, Jio and Vi among more than 500 carriers.
Analysts who walked the first-year numbers with one business daily put Duo shipments around 200,000 in the first full year, about 20% of a 1.2 million-unit 2027 market. Pathak said the upper end of India’s foldable market could reach 1.5 million units if the Duo beats those estimates, with supply, not demand, as the early constraint. Those are forecasts, not orders. They still describe a halo, not a mass SKU.
On September 15, Ternus had the phone out again at the Emmy Awards, a reminder that the global launch is a brand event. The India test is narrower. It is whether a ₹2,99,900 import can do halo duty without handing the actual sale to a grey importer or to a Fold 8 already in the market at ₹1,79,999.
Pre-Orders Open on October 16
THE DUO CALENDAR

- September 18, 2026: iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max go on sale in India.
- October 16, 2026: Duo pre-orders open at 5:30 p.m. IST.
- October 23, 2026: Duo sales start in India and more than 70 countries, including the US, Japan and the UAE.

Between those dates the Pro line will already be in drawers, older iPhones will sit at the new higher tags, and Samsung’s eighth-generation foldables will have had a three-month head start. Lakhyani’s ask is still a lower MRP or a hard offer. Apple has not posted either. The Duo will arrive as the dearest iPhone India has listed, on a finished-goods import, into a category Samsung already holds at 89%. That is the product Apple will ask official retail to move first.
