Modern Warfare 4’s 92 Percent Steam Score Is Campaign-Only

Modern Warfare 4 sits at 92 percent Very Positive on Steam after campaign early access, a score that still excludes DMZ and multiplayer.

92 percent of Steam reviews for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 are positive, a Very Positive badge built only on campaign early access that opened on October 16. Digital pre-orders got the full story a week before launch. DMZ follows on October 20, and traditional multiplayer still waits until October 23.

Infinity Ward’s last Modern Warfare chapter is, on that sample, the best-reviewed Call of Duty on Steam since 2010’s Black Ops. It is also a score of a six-to-seven-hour campaign that most buyers of the $69.99 game have not been allowed to leave.

Steam’s 92 Percent Covers Only the Campaign

Steam’s own review_percentage field for app 4435490 sits at 92, the threshold that prints Very Positive. That figure is not a verdict on 6v6, Ground War, or the Hajin extraction map. It is a verdict on a story mode that digital pre-orders unlocked on October 16, four days before DMZ and a week before the rest of the product.

THE STEAM SAMPLE SO FAR

  • Steam badge: Very Positive, with a 92 percent review share.
  • English filter: 94 percent of 1,963 English reviews recommend the game.
  • All-language split: SteamDB counts 3,959 positive reviews and 309 negative, a 92.8 percent raw yes share.
  • Cross-game score: the same tracker’s Bayesian rating is 89.31 percent, which is how this title lines up against older Call of Duty pages.

Those four numbers describe one window. Anyone who wanted the campaign on October 16 had to pre-order or pre-purchase a digital Standard or Vault copy. Disc buyers and anyone waiting for October 23 are not in this pile yet. SteamDB also lists Modern Warfare 4 as DLC on the main Call of Duty app (1938090), which is why public concurrent-player counts have not appeared.

From 82 Percent to Very Positive on October 19

The share did not open at 92. Steam’s review_percentage sat at 82 on October 17, the first full day of logged changes after Friday’s unlock, then rose almost every hour as more players finished missions.

HOW THE PERCENTAGE MOVED

  1. October 17, 2026: Steam’s review share climbs from 82 percent to 89 percent as campaign reviews land through the day.
  2. October 18, 2026: the share crosses 90 percent in the morning and reaches 91 percent by afternoon.
  3. October 19, 2026: it ticks from 91 to 92 percent, the Very Positive badge that later write-ups treated as a franchise reset.

A rising curve on a campaign-only sample is still a rising curve. Players who went in expecting a refund wrote that the story held them for a full sitting. One Steam review put it without hedging: “You actually deserved that ending, Infinity Ward.” Another said they had waited to be let down and then played the campaign in a day.

The same pages that cheered the number also flagged the sample. These are the people who paid early to play a linear shooter before the live modes open. They are not a random slice of the installed base that will show up on October 23.

Black Ops 7, Black Ops 6 and the Sub-50 Club

On SteamDB’s formula, Modern Warfare 4’s 89.31 percent SteamDB rating sits 0.01 points under 2010’s Black Ops at 89.32 percent and well above 2015’s Black Ops III at 84.36 percent. That is the “highest in a decade” claim with the decimal attached. The last four yearly Call of Duty pages, by contrast, never recovered from live-service wear.

STEAMDB RATINGS ACROSS CALL OF DUTY

Game SteamDB rating Steam band, in plain terms
Black Ops (2010) 89.32% Still the modern high-water mark
Modern Warfare 4 (campaign sample) 89.31% Tied with 2010, for now
Black Ops III (2015) 84.36% Previous post-2010 ceiling
Black Ops Cold War 77.96% Mostly Positive range
Modern Warfare (2019) 77.87% Closest reboot-era peer
WWII 69.73% Mid-pack
Vanguard 65.95% Mid-pack
Modern Warfare III (2023) 48.19% Under 50 percent
Modern Warfare II (2022) 47.10% Under 50 percent
Black Ops 6 45.75% Under 50 percent
Black Ops 7 38.71% Worst of the recent set

Black Ops 7’s 38.71 percent is the hole Infinity Ward is being asked to fill. Modern Warfare II’s 47.10 percent and Modern Warfare III’s 48.19 percent show the same pattern after a year of playlists, anti-cheat fights, and store fatigue. A campaign can print a 92. A live Call of Duty page has spent the last four cycles under 50.

What the 16-Mission Campaign Delivers

Call of Duty staff opened early access with a clean pitch: sixteen missions across Korea, Paris, New York and Mumbai, with Private Park Hyun Jun on the Korean invasion and John Price hunting the person pulling the strings. The studio framed it as the last chapter of the reboot saga that started in 2019. Completion rewards, including operators named Cho, Dallas, and Park, bank for multiplayer and DMZ once the full build is live.

WHERE THE STORY RUNS

  • Korean Peninsula: trench fights, city assaults, and a beach landing that reviewers keep comparing to a local D-Day.
  • New York: a close-quarters Price chapter that one critic likened to a nightclub gun-fu sequence.
  • Paris: high-speed chase work in the Price half of the plot.
  • Mumbai: SAS night raids, still in the sixteen-mission count rather than as downloadable extras.

Simon Cardy, who published campaign impressions on October 16 and held numeric scores until DMZ and multiplayer, finished the sixteen missions in roughly seven hours. Other playthroughs land a little over six. Those are two clocks on the same short campaign, not a disagreement about whether it is a twenty-hour game.

Modern Warfare 4 made me feel something for the series again. A consistently strong set of missions manages to juggle a bloated cast successfully, saying goodbye to familiar faces while building impressive bonds with new ones. It may not have quite enough to be considered amongst the very best Call of Duty campaigns, but if it’s to be the end of this particular saga, then at least Modern Warfare is going out on a high note.

Simon Cardy, campaign impressions, October 16, 2026

Cardy called it the best Modern Warfare has been since the 2019 reboot, then named the limits. Price’s Bond-movie half, including Mads Mikkelsen as The Archer, got less grip than Park’s squad. The standout mission, Stranded, is a snowy behind-the-lines map with three objectives in any order, scavenging, and a basement hideout, which is also a tutorial for DMZ. Stealth and an imprecise melee system are where he said the campaign stumbled. There is no All Ghillied Up in this set, in his view, and there is also no Modern Warfare 3-style collage of multiplayer maps holding a plot together with tape.

DMZ Early Access Opens on October 20

The same digital pre-order that unlocked the campaign on October 16 opens all of DMZ on October 20, three days before launch. Multiplayer is not in that window. Physical Standard discs are not either. Standard Digital at $69.99 and Vault at $99.99 both qualify on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, PlayStation 5, Battle.net, Steam, and Nintendo Switch 2.

THE THREE UNLOCKS

  • October 16: full campaign for digital pre-orders, sixteen missions, no chapters held back.
  • October 20: all of DMZ, including the Forward Operating Base and the Hajin map, for the same digital copies.
  • October 23: full launch at 05:00 UTC on SteamDB’s clock, when traditional multiplayer joins the build for everyone who owns it.

On October 20, pre-order players started posting that they were already in DMZ, while others still found the mode locked. That split is what an extraction launch looks like from the sofa: one friend is looting Hajin, another is staring at a greyed-out tile, and both will eventually write Steam reviews that no longer describe a six-hour story. The campaign score cannot absorb those posts. It can only sit next to them on the same page.

DMZ is also where Infinity Ward folded its open mission into the plot. If Hajin plays like Stranded with other squads hunting you, the Steam file will start reading like a live-service page. If it plays like a mode people actually extract from, the 92 percent has a chance to survive contact. The reviews filed before October 20 cannot answer that.

No Game Pass Slot Until Holiday 2027

Modern Warfare 4 launches as a standalone purchase. Call of Duty’s Intel team said the game is not on Game Pass until Holiday 2027, so a subscription does not cover campaign early access, DMZ, or the October 23 unlock. That choice keeps this Steam sample even tighter. The people reviewing it bought it.

Xbox already reversed a Game Pass bet that had put Call of Duty in the subscription pile and then watched the service stumble. Holding MW4 off the tier until late 2027 is the other side of that turn: a $69.99 disc-or-download beat, with Vault extras stacked on top, and no day-one flood of Game Pass accounts dumping reviews after a weekend of multiplayer.

Digital pre-orders still get the cosmetic hook. The Hunter Killer operator skin and Gilded Pearl camo pack unlock immediately, and so does the Inner Circuit M4 weapon blueprint, a 25th-anniversary rifle skin that other players cannot always see depending on how the client loads cosmetics. Those perks are why the campaign window filled with the series’ keenest spenders. They are also why a 92 percent badge on 3,959 yes votes is a poor forecast of the page on October 24.

Traditional multiplayer unlocks on October 23 on the same Steam listing that now scores only the campaign. The 92 percent will still be there at midnight. It will not be the same number by the time the first weekend of 6v6 is over, unless this is the first Call of Duty in four years whose live modes fail to write the rest of the reviews.
