Leaked DLSS 5 Warps Faces and Halves Frame Rates

A leaked DLSS 5 library halved frame rates in Control and warped faces, while NVIDIA still prices official neural rendering at 50 to 60 percent.

A leaked NVIDIA library cut an RTX 5070 Ti from 71 to 35 frames per second at 4K in Control, and the faces came out wrong. The file, nvngx_dlssnr.dll, sat inside an NBA 2K27 early-access build. Official DLSS 5 goes live in that same game on September 3.

NVIDIA now prices the shipping feature at 50 to 60 percent of the frame rate, on every game it has measured. The leaked mods had no engine hooks and no artist masks. Both facts are about to share a launch week.

A Leaked File From NBA 2K27 Did This

Renan Maniero found the library in Visual Concepts’ early-access drop. Windows listed it as NVIDIA DLSSNR version 310.8.0.0. At 158MB, with about 148 million FP8 parameters, it is far larger than any prior DLSS file, and most of that bulk is neural weights.

RenoDX modders pulled the DLL into Remedy’s Control within a day, then into Cyberpunk 2077, Grand Theft Auto V, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Skyrim, and a stack of older titles. A second patch from the modder Uncle Burrito stripped the Blackwell-only gate so the same file would run on RTX 4090 and RTX 4080 cards. NVIDIA’s public line is still RTX 50 Series only.

WHAT CAME OUT OF THE 2K BUILD

  • The library: nvngx_dlssnr.dll, labelled NVIDIA DLSSNR 310.8.0.0, about 158MB with 148 million FP8 parameters.
  • The first port: RenoDX injected it into Control, then spread the same crude toolset across more than a dozen games.
  • The hardware gate: the leak ran on RTX 50 cards first; Uncle Burrito later forced Ada Lovelace cards to load it.
  • The sliders: testers exposed style, intensity, tone, and structure controls that NVIDIA later described as Structure Intensity and Tone Intensity for studios.

None of those ports had the per-pixel masks Visual Concepts is using on real NBA faces. They had a research-grade generator bolted onto a finished image, which is how Jesse Faden and Cloud Strife became the week’s screenshots.

Why Jesse Faden Looks Like Max Payne

DLSS 5 does not reconstruct a sharper version of a frame the way Super Resolution does. NVIDIA’s applied deep learning lab calls it the first productized generative rendering model, a one-step pixel-space diffusion pass that writes the final look of the image from the engine’s color, motion vectors, and a carried temporal state.

That is the gap the mods fell into. Control, Rebirth, and GTA were never authored for this stage. The model still tries to add subsurface scattering, contact shadows, and fabric sheen because that is what it was trained to do. On a 2019 hero face with no likeness mask, the extra light reads as wax. Still shots can look rich. Once a mouth moves, the same pass often goes plastic.

Edward Liu, NVIDIA’s director of applied deep learning research, told journalists the company’s aim is photorealism in real time. Peter Kavic, senior producer at Visual Concepts, is using the same stack on scanned NBA players and talking about the opposite problem: holding a real face still.

We can set the overall tone and style to match our existing art direction and then really get precise where it matters most, using a per pixel uplift control mask to fine tune detail on characters, given that we want to respect their likeness with the utmost care.

The leak had those sliders with nobody sitting on them. Testers who kept the effect on lighting and left faces alone got cleaner results in God of War Ragnarok and in a GTA IV Remix build. Crank structure on a stylized or low-res head and you get the Max Payne 2001 look that tore through timelines last week.

The First DLSS That Costs Frames

Every earlier DLSS trade was supposed to buy frames. Super Resolution, Frame Generation, and Multi Frame Generation exist to put more pictures on screen than the rasterizer can finish. Neural rendering spends the budget those tools just created.

On the leaked path, an RTX 5090 running Control fell from 91 frames to 50, a 45 percent cut. An RTX 4090 running the patched Ada build dropped from about 135 to 82, a 39 percent cut. NVIDIA did not call those tests official. It then put a number of its own on the shipping code: 50 to 60 percent off, on average, across games.

The company wants that cost read next to the rest of the stack. DLSS 4.5 can already draw 23 of every 24 pixels on screen. Turn on Super Resolution and 6x Multi Frame Generation, and NVIDIA’s NBA 2K27 charts still show hundreds of frames. Those charts need the small print. An RTX 5060 at 258 frames per second at 1080p with 6x generation is finishing about 43 real frames and inventing the rest.

NVIDIA did not publish the matching figures with neural rendering off. The 50 to 60 percent tax is the comparison that matters, because Multi Frame Generation is doing the cosmetic rescue on the scoreboard. Play without it and you are back in the Control numbers: half the frame rate for a lighting pass.

From Two RTX 5090s to One Card

The ugly screenshots did not come from nowhere. NVIDIA spent six months answering a GTC demo that a lot of players read as an AI makeup filter.

SIX MONTHS OF DLSS 5

  1. March 16, 2026: NVIDIA unveils DLSS 5 at GTC as its most significant breakthrough since real-time ray tracing, running the demo on two RTX 5090s.
  2. July 2026: At SIGGRAPH in Los Angeles the company shows three models, object masks, and a single-GPU path after the GTC film drew a backlash over artistic intent.
  3. Late August 2026: Gamescom briefings add more controls. Then the NBA 2K27 early-access build leaks nvngx_dlssnr.dll and RenoDX ports it into Control.
  4. September 1, 2026: Embargo lifts. NVIDIA says the model is five times faster than March and still costs 50 to 60 percent.
  5. September 3, 2026: NBA 2K27 ships DLSS 5 at 9pm Pacific for RTX 50 desktops, laptops, and GeForce NOW Ultimate.

Jensen Huang, NVIDIA’s founder and CEO, called it the GPT moment for graphics when the March release went out, a blend of handcrafted rendering and generative AI. The sentence that stuck with players was simpler: the tech seemed to redraw faces. SIGGRAPH and Gamescom were the walk-back. Geometry stays. Silhouettes stay. Developers get Structure Intensity for high-frequency cues (ambient occlusion, reflections, scattering through skin) and Tone Intensity for broader light and color, including a zero setting that keeps the engine’s palette.

Asked whether RTX 40 cards would get a fallback, NVIDIA’s answer at the briefing was that this is the largest model it has built and the work has been for RTX 50. That is not a yes.

Only Blackwell Cards Get the Official Switch

The leak already runs on last-gen silicon. The product does not. NVIDIA told the Gamescom room, in a one-word answer, that DLSS 5 is RTX 50 Series only. It uses Blackwell’s fifth-generation Tensor cores. GeForce NOW Ultimate is the other door, and those cloud boxes are RTX 5080 machines.

March’s publisher list was long: Bethesda, CAPCOM, Hotta Studio, NetEase, NCSOFT, S-GAME, Tencent, Ubisoft, Warner Bros. Games. Todd Howard said Bethesda wanted it in Starfield. Jun Takeuchi pointed at Resident Evil. Charlie Guillemot talked about Assassin’s Creed Shadows. After the GTC backlash, NVIDIA would not confirm dates for any of those games beyond NBA 2K27.

That is the quieter stake. Visual Concepts can mask Cade Cunningham’s face because the studio has the scans and the likeness lawyers. A mid-tier Unreal title that flicks the Streamline plugin on, with no per-pixel mask and no lighting director in the loop, is much closer to the RenoDX ports than to 2K’s broadcast look. The PlayStation 3 emulator project RPCS3 tested the leaked DLL on its renderer and refused to ship it, with the team writing, “We have seen the slop it generates.”

The sharper worry on PC is not the emulator crowd. It is that neural rendering follows ray tracing and upscaling into the “on by default” pile, so a game looks unfinished without a 50 Series card and a 50 percent tax. That is already how a lot of path-traced titles behave. DLSS 5 gives that pattern a face slider.

DLSS 1 Looked Soft in Battlefield V

In February 2019, Battlefield V and Metro Exodus were the first real DLSS games, and the pictures went soft. NVIDIA said it had trained mainly for 4K, that 1080p did not have enough source pixels, and that more training data was coming. Players called it a blur filter. A few seasons later, DLSS 2 made the same brand the default upscaler on PC.

The rhyme is real and it is incomplete. DLSS 1 gave you frames and asked you to live with mush. DLSS 5 asks you to spend frames on a look the artist may not have signed. There is no ground-truth frame to score against, which is why NVIDIA built the masks. Reconstruction can be measured. A generated sheen on a jersey cannot.

Six months from two flagship cards to a 5060 laptop is a fast shrink. The leaked 50 percent cuts say the shrink is not finished. Anyone waiting for this tax to vanish the way the 2019 blur did is betting on a different problem. Blur was a quality bug in an upscaler. This is inference cost in a generator that writes the last stage of the pipeline.

NBA 2K27 Turns It On Thursday Night

At 9pm Pacific on September 3, Visual Concepts ships 3D-guided neural rendering in NBA 2K27 with a Game Ready driver and an F9 toggle. Kavic’s team is selling light through ears, hair catching arena lamps, and contact shadows on a collar, on top of faces they are contractually required not to rewrite. That is a sports game with photogrammetry and a broadcast brief. It is also, for now, the only game NVIDIA will name.

The Control shots, the Cloud shots, and the GTA stills stay up anyway. They are what most people have actually seen. Thursday night will show whether a studio that sat with the SDK can make the same model look like basketball. The frame bill will not be a surprise. NVIDIA already sent that invoice.
