Xbox players are in for a treat this weekend. Microsoft’s latest Free Play Days event just dropped, and—shockingly—it’s actually good this time. After a string of forgettable lineups, this week’s selection offers a genuinely decent mix, including a fan-favorite shooter, a cult classic remake, and one game that’s completely free even if you don’t have Xbox Game Pass.
Don’t sleep on this one—it’s live now and runs through August 3. That’s your weekend gaming plans sorted.
What’s Free? A Little Bit of Everything
This weekend’s freebies are a nice spread across genres. You’ve got:
WWE 2K25 Standard Edition
Dynasty Warriors: Origins
I, Robot
The Ascent
Each title brings something unique. Whether you’re a wrestling die-hard, a hack-and-slash junkie, or just in the mood for a retro-inspired trip, there’s probably at least one title here you’ll want to check out.
WWE 2K25: Not Just for Wrestling Fans
Wrestling games can be hit or miss, depending on how into the sport you are. WWE 2K25 might not be everyone’s thing, but it’s polished and packed with content. It’s also the latest installment, so no digging through outdated rosters or awkward mechanics from earlier versions.
Richard Lee Breslin over at GAMINGbible gave it an 8/10, calling it a “strong return to form.” That’s not nothing, especially coming from someone who practically lives in the squared circle.
Even if you’re not usually into WWE, this one might surprise you.
Dynasty Warriors: Origins Is a Hidden Gem
Out of the four games on the list, this one arguably has the most surprise factor. Dynasty Warriors: Origins didn’t make huge waves at launch, but those who tried it—including this article’s source—swear by it.
This one’s for the “one vs. thousands” crowd. If mowing down entire armies with a single character sounds like your idea of fun, there’s a good chance you’ll lose a few hours to this before the weekend’s over.
And honestly? It’s probably the standout of the bunch.
Just one quick note: It can be a bit repetitive, but that’s kind of the point. Fans know what they’re signing up for—and Origins delivers on that classic formula.
I, Robot: A Retro Flashback With a 2024 Twist
No, not the Will Smith movie. And no, not a straight port of Atari’s 1984 arcade experiment, either. This year’s I, Robot is a full-on remake that pays homage to the original’s weirdness while throwing in a lot more color and chaos.
The visuals are… a lot. Think neon overload meets mid-’80s polygonal fever dream. It may not be for everyone, especially if you’re sensitive to flashing lights or chaotic design, but it does look different from anything else out right now.
It’s the most offbeat title of the bunch, but that might just be what makes it worth a quick download.
The Ascent: No Game Pass Needed, Just Jump In
Now this is a smart move from Xbox. The Ascent, a twin-stick shooter from 2021 that still holds up beautifully, doesn’t even require Game Pass to play. Just boot it up and go.
The game blends a dark cyberpunk world with fast-paced, brutal combat. It looks incredible too—easily one of the best-looking indie games from the last few years.
Some quick context:
Developed by Neon Giant, a small Swedish studio.
Published by Curve Digital.
Supports both single-player and online co-op.
And for once, the system requirements aren’t crazy, so even on older Xbox consoles, it runs surprisingly well.
Time’s Ticking—You’ve Got Until Sunday Night
This whole lineup is available now and disappears at 11:59 PM on August 3. That gives you about two days to try everything out. That’s more than enough time to find a favorite—or three.
Unlike last week’s offering, which frankly felt like a bin dive, this is a lineup with actual draw. Even if none of these become your next obsession, each one is at least worth a couple of hours of your time.
And let’s be honest: It’s hard to complain when the price tag is literally zero.
