HBO Expects The Last of Us to End After Season 3
Casey Bloys said Season 3 of The Last of Us is planned as the end, which would squeeze the rest of Part II into 2027 without Naughty Dog in the room.
HBO chief Casey Bloys said The Last of Us Season 3 is planned as the final season and will arrive in 2027. He offered no air date.
He said it on September 14, 2026, at HBO Max’s Emmys afterparty at the San Vicente Bungalows in West Hollywood. Cameras have been up in British Columbia since March. The studio that wrote the games is not in the writers’ room.
A 2027 Finale, Still Without a Date
Asked when Season 3 would air, Bloys, chairman and CEO of HBO and Max Content, said it would happen in ’27. Pressed on whether he would confirm it as the last season, he pointed at showrunner Craig Mazin rather than at a network order.
It’ll be happening in ’27. I don’t have a date. I think Craig has planned it as the final season.
Casey Bloys, Chairman and CEO of HBO and Max Content, at HBO Max’s Emmys afterparty
That is as close as HBO has come to an endpoint, and it is still a hedge. Bloys did not say Season 4 is dead. He said Mazin has structured the next run as the end of Ellie’s story.
He has been circling the same line for months. In January 2026 he said a third-season finish “certainly seems that way.” In 2025 he said Mazin was still choosing between two more seasons and one more long season, and that HBO would follow Mazin’s lead. The September comment is the same bet, said with less room to wriggle.
On HBO’s official series hub the show is still listed as two seasons and 16 episodes, a nine-Emmy winner with Season 2 streaming. Season 3 is the first run being treated, in public, as a closing chapter.
Mazin Once Called Three Seasons Impossible
The friction sits in Mazin’s own words. On May 19, 2025, six days before Season 2 ended, he said the remaining story would not fit in one more season.
“There’s no way to complete this narrative in a third season,” he said. “Hopefully, we’ll earn our keep enough to come back and finish it in a fourth. That’s the most likely outcome.” He added that finishing Part II inside Season 3 “would take forever,” and that there was “a decent chance” Season 3 would run longer than Season 2.
Mazin’s Television Academy credits already include Chernobyl and the first two seasons of this show. He has been talking about length since 2023, when he said the series could “end up being three or five” seasons and that “four seems like a good number.” HBO drama chief Francesca Orsi said in 2025 it was “looking like four seasons,” then described the plan as Season 2 plus two more.
THE SEASON-COUNT TRAIL
- 2023: Mazin says the show could run three or five seasons, and that four looks like a good number.
- April 9, 2025: HBO renews The Last of Us for Season 3, days before Season 2 premieres.
- May 19, 2025: Mazin says there is “no way” to finish the story in a third season and calls a fourth “the most likely outcome.”
- July 2, 2025: Neil Druckmann steps away from creative work on the show before Season 3 writing is underway.
- January 2026: Bloys says a Season 3 ending “certainly seems that way.”
- September 14, 2026: Bloys says Mazin has planned Season 3 as the final season, due in 2027.
The extra season Mazin wanted has not been announced. What has been announced is a longer third season, which is how a four-season map gets folded into one shoot.
How Much of Part II Is Left?
Season 2 spent seven episodes on Ellie’s Seattle hunt after Joel’s murder and stopped in the theater. Season 3 is built as Abby’s matching three days, then has to resolve that fight. If it is also the series finale, the farm and Santa Barbara have to fit in the same run.
Naughty Dog’s 2020 game splits that story in two. Ellie walks Seattle for three days. Then the player spends three days as Abby Anderson, the Washington Liberation Front soldier who killed Joel. Only after those days collide in a theater does the game move to a farm, and then to Santa Barbara.
Season 2, which ran from April 13 to May 25, 2025, stayed with Ellie. Pedro Pascal’s Joel dies in the second episode. Bella Ramsey carries the hunt with Isabela Merced’s Dina and Young Mazino’s Jesse. The finale, “Convergence,” puts Kaitlyn Dever’s Abby in the theater, kills Jesse, and cuts to black on a gunshot. The next image is Abby waking at the WLF’s stadium base. On-screen text reads “Seattle Day One.”
That cut is the season break. It is also a pile of unfinished plot.
STILL UNFILMED ON THE GAME’S MAP
- Abby’s Seattle: Three days with the WLF, including Jeffrey Wright’s Isaac and the war with the Seraphites.
- Lev and Yara: The Seraphite siblings, played by Kyriana Kratter and Michelle Mao, whom Abby meets on that path.
- The theater: The fight Season 2 already started, now seen from Abby’s side and then played to its end.
- The farm: Ellie and Dina after Seattle, the quiet stretch the game uses before it goes south again.
- Santa Barbara: The last movement of Part II, where the two stories meet for good.
Mazin kept Ellie and Abby’s timelines sequential on purpose. He said HBO understood the show would be “a different show every season,” and that the point was to deny easy heroes and villains. That design is why he wanted two more seasons. A finale order does not change the map. It changes how much road has to fit in 2027.
THREE SEASONS, TWO GAMES
| Season | Episodes | Story covered | Creative lead | Naughty Dog’s role |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Season 1 (2023) | 9 | The first game, start to finish | Mazin and Druckmann | Creative partner |
| Season 2 (2025) | 7 | Ellie’s Seattle half of Part II | Mazin and Druckmann | Creative partner |
| Season 3 (2027) | Not announced; an eighth episode is listed in production | Abby’s Seattle, then whatever remains if this is the end | Mazin alone | No creative role |
HBO lists Season 2’s seven listed episodes in full on its own site. Season 3 is described as longer and larger than that seven-episode run. Larger is not the same as two seasons.
Naughty Dog Stepped Off Before Season 3
The person who wrote that map is not writing this season. Neil Druckmann, Naughty Dog’s studio head and the co-creator of the games, posted his exit on July 2, 2025, after Season 2 was done and before Season 3 was underway.
I’ve made the difficult decision to step away from my creative involvement in The Last of Us on HBO. With work completed on season 2 and before any meaningful work starts on season 3, now is the right time for me to transition my complete focus to Naughty Dog and its future projects, including writing and directing our exciting next game, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, along with my responsibilities as Studio Head and Head of Creative.
Neil Druckmann, July 2, 2025 statement
He thanked Mazin and the crew, kept an executive producer credit, and said he looked forward to HBO and PlayStation Productions continuing Ellie and Abby’s story. Halley Gross, who co-wrote Part II, left day-to-day work at the same time. Writer Bo Shim also stepped away. A writers’ room that had opened in late February 2025 lost the game’s authors before Mazin began drafting in August.
On September 3, 2026, Druckmann made the distance blunt. “I wasn’t involved in shaping this season’s creative direction, and Naughty Dog did not have a creative role in the direction of this season,” he said. “So I can’t personally speak to how production is progressing.”
He still called Naughty Dog “the steward of this IP.” He also said that even if this is the end of the television run, “we’re not done with The Last of Us,” and that “a couple projects” are in the works. The games and the show are no longer the same job.
Ryan James, who worked on the games, and Alexandra Cheng, Mazin’s Season 2 writing assistant, remained in the room on the public record. Gustavo Santaolalla is set to score again. Peter Sarsgaard joined as Amon, a Seraphite leader who does not appear in the games. Original characters are a luxury in a season that is also being asked to finish a 2020 story.
The British Columbia Shoot Already Treats This as the End
Principal photography began March 2, 2026, in British Columbia under the working title Calm Current, and is scheduled to finish on November 27, 2026. Dever went north for pre-production in late January. Mazin directed the premiere to set the tone, then handed blocks to Vincenzo Natali, David Petrarca, Andrew Bernstein, and Hiromi Kamata.
A 14-hectare outdoor set went up near Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows, with weathered buildings, boats, and blue screens. Crews closed streets in Gastown for rooftop work with Dever and Kratter. A WLF convoy rolled through New Westminster. BC Place was dressed as the WLF’s stadium home, matching the Seattle field seen at the end of Season 2. Ramsey was due to join in September, which fits a season that starts as Abby’s story and still needs Ellie before the end.
Production paused on June 1, 2026, first listed as four weeks and later stretched to seven, while Vancouver hosted World Cup matches. Jorge Lendeborg Jr. replaced Danny Ramirez as Manny after a scheduling conflict. Patrick Wilson was cast as Abby’s father, Jerry. Gabriel Luna’s Tommy, a hero in Jackson for two seasons, becomes a threat in Abby’s chapters. Leeann Stonebreaker is producing. The first season cost more than $10 million per episode, over CA$100 million in all, which is the kind of bill that makes an open-ended fourth season a board question, not only a writers’ room question.
None of that schedule reads like a show waiting to learn if it will be picked up again. It reads like a closing run already in the can by late November, aimed at a 2027 slot Bloys still will not date.
Season 2’s Ratings Gave HBO a Ceiling
Season 2 still drew a huge crowd. It did not draw the same opening-night heat as Season 1, and the finale night was softer than the premiere.
WHAT HBO COUNTED AFTER SEASON 2
- Premiere night: 5.3 million U.S. viewers across HBO and Max on April 13, 2025.
- Finale night: 3.7 million on May 25, 2025, a 30% drop from that premiere and 55% below the Season 1 finale’s 8.2 million.
- Season average: nearly 37 million global viewers per episode, against Season 1’s 32 million after 90 days, a different window HBO still used as its comparison.
- Franchise reach: more than 90 million viewers since Season 1 ended.
HBO flagged the Memorial Day weekend and said the 3.7 million figure would grow. The U.S. viewership by episode still shows a series that peaks lower on premiere night than it did in 2023. Joel’s death, the shift onto Ellie, and the wait for Abby’s half all sat inside that drop. A third season that asks new viewers to sit through Abby’s three days before the theater pays off is a harder sell than Season 1’s road story. Ending there is also a way not to spend another two years proving the point.
The easy comparison is Game of Thrones, which kept going after the books ran out. This show still has a finished game in front of it. Stopping on that last page is how it avoids writing past the source. The harder problem is the page count. Abby’s half was built as a season. The farm and Santa Barbara were built as another. Mazin said so out loud in May 2025. Bloys is now describing that leftover map as one 2027 drop.
The Games Can Outlive the Show
Druckmann’s September comments split the franchise on purpose. Television can end. Naughty Dog, he said, is not done. Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet is the game in front of him. The “couple projects” he would not name are the ones that matter to anyone who wants Ellie and Abby after HBO is finished.
The series was never meant to pass the games. Mazin has said the story will not overtake them. If Season 3 is the last season, that vow becomes a closing date: the show ends where Part II ends, and any Part III belongs to the studio that just left the set.
Mazin has not publicly answered Bloys since the Emmys party. Until he does, the plan is the one the CEO described: a 2027 season, longer than seven episodes, built around Dever, with Ramsey still to come, shot through November 27, 2026, without Naughty Dog in the room. The theater gunshot from May 25, 2025, is still hanging. So is every chapter after it.
If that season has to be the ending, Santa Barbara is not a later problem. It is on this call sheet.
