Gambhir Tells Sooryavanshi That India’s Openers Will Stay
Gautam Gambhir told Vaibhav Sooryavanshi that Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson keep India’s T20 opening slots, even after he once dropped Samson for the 15-year-old.
India head coach Gautam Gambhir has told Vaibhav Sooryavanshi that form will not break the country’s T20 opening pair. The 15-year-old already holds India’s youngest debut, youngest international fifty and youngest Asian Games gold, and he is in the squad for the West Indies T20Is that start on 6 October in Lucknow. On JioStar’s Follow the Blues, Gambhir named the two men he would have to leave out: Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson.
That talk was billed as a chat with a teenager. It reads as a public contract with the two seniors who actually occupy the slots.
What Gambhir Told Sooryavanshi About the Playing XI
Gambhir said the wait was new for him too, and that being in form is not the same as being picked. He also drew a line under the noise that has followed every XI since the England tour.
It was a new experience for me as well. Yes, he was in good form, but I made him understand that sometimes, because of the players who have done well for a long time, he will have to wait for his opportunity. And there’s one more thing, social media or outside noise doesn’t decide the playing eleven.

He then named the cost. If Sooryavanshi plays, Gambhir said, the next conversation is with whoever is left out, “whether it’s Abhishek or Sanju.” He would not, he said, dump a pair that has mattered for one and a half or two years after three or four failures, just to pick a young batter who is talented and in form. The point of the delay, he added, is “security in that dressing room.”
Popular calls are easy, he said. The right ones are harder. “We’ve taken the right decision of continuing with Sanju and Abhishek.” No side, he argued, goes unbeaten from one World Cup to the next, wins the next one, then turns into a bad side after one poor series.
The Only Night He Could Not Sleep
The same interview undercuts the idea that this pair was never touched. Gambhir has already broken it once, and he has said that night still sits with him.
Samson was Player of the Tournament when India won the T20 World Cup earlier in the year. India then left him out after the first T20I of the England series in July so Sooryavanshi could debut. Gambhir called that the only night in two years of coaching when he could not sleep, and he told Samson so, because a Player of the Tournament was being left out after three or four games. The reason, he said, was that Sooryavanshi was in that kind of form and India had to win the series. He wanted runs, and a platform, at the top. Samson, he said, took it in good spirits.
THE SELECTION ARC
- 4 July 2026: Sooryavanshi debuts at Old Trafford in the second T20I against England after the Chester-le-Street opener is washed out. Samson is the senior left out.
- 23 to 26 July 2026: The teenager makes a 50 off 19 balls against Zimbabwe, then 81 off 49, and is named Player of the Series.
- September 2026: India restore Samson and Abhishek for a 3-0 T20I sweep of Afghanistan. Sooryavanshi does not play.
- 3 October 2026: He returns for the Asian Games knockouts, scores 38 off 21 in the semi-final, 15 off 9 in the final, and leaves Japan with gold.
- 5 October 2026: Gambhir says the openers stay, and that outside noise will not pick the XI for West Indies.
India already proved it will break the pair when a series is on the line. The new message is that it will not keep breaking it. That is why the hidden names in the clip are Samson and Abhishek, not the 15-year-old holding the mic in the public mind.
Sooryavanshi Already Owns India’s Age Records
The patience talk would land differently if the batter being parked had only a debut cameo. He has not. On 4 July at Old Trafford he became the youngest cricketer to represent India, at 15 years and 99 days, taking a mark Sachin Tendulkar had held since a Test debut against Pakistan in Karachi on 15 November 1989, at 16 years and 205 days. He also went past Washington Sundar, who had been India’s youngest men’s T20I cricketer at 18 years and 80 days.
He scored 14 off 10 on debut, with two sixes, and was stumped off Will Jacks. The next two England innings added 28. Then came Harare. On 23 July, at 15 years and 118 days, he reached a fifty off 18 balls and finished with 50 off 19, the youngest half-century in men’s international cricket. Two nights later he made 20. On 26 July he hit 81 off 49. The series haul was 151 runs at a strike rate of 196.10, and the Player of the Series award.
Career figures listed for him show 246 T20I runs in eight innings, average 30.75, strike rate 186.36, high score 81, two fifties, 22 fours and 18 sixes. He has not made a T20I hundred. The sample is still small. The speed of it is not.
AGE MARKS ON THE FILE

| Youngest men’s international fifty | 15 years, 118 days | 23 July 2026, T20I vs Zimbabwe, Harare |
| Youngest Indian Asian Games gold | 15 years, 6 months, 6 days | 3 October 2026, cricket final vs Pakistan, Nisshin |
| Youngest IPL player | 14 years, 23 days | IPL 2025, Rajasthan Royals |

Captain Shreyas Iyer had no nerves about using him in July. “No pressure to play him. He deserves the spot,” Iyer said after the debut. “He doesn’t take pressure at all.” The coach’s later line sits beside that, not on top of it: talent is granted, the XI is not.
Why Sooryavanshi Sat Out Against Afghanistan
The Afghanistan series is where the contract was stress-tested in public. Sooryavanshi watched from the bench while Abhishek hit the third fastest T20I century in a 127-run win that sealed a 3-0 sweep. Abhishek and Samson were the two leading run-scorers across the three games. Gambhir had already told the teenager there would be a clear talk that he will have to wait.
“Someone who has been performing for the last two to three years will always be ahead of someone who has just entered the team,” Gambhir said then. Age, he added, does not change the queue. “Whether you’re a 15-year-old or a 30-year-old, when you have to wait for your opportunity, you have to wait for your opportunity.” He also offered the other half of the deal: when the long run comes, it will be a long run.
He was blunt about the template. India, he said, wanted to go back to the T20 World Cup opening combination. Three or four failures do not make those players bad, and one or two series do not make a gun team a bad team. That is the same logic he repeated on Follow the Blues. The Afghanistan scores gave him cover. The policy was already written.
He sat out the Afghanistan T20Is and a one-off T20I against Japan before the Asian Games. The benching is what lit the feed. The charge since July has been that the staff wrapped the World Cup seniors in cotton wool because a 15-year-old had just made them look replaceable. Gambhir is not answering that charge by denying the protection. He is naming it as the plan.
Gold in Nisshin Did Not Buy a Slot
The Asian Games looked, from the outside, like the longer run he had been promised. It was a tournament window, not a bilateral holding pattern, and he was picked to open. It still did not move the home T20I queue.
In the semi-final against Sri Lanka he smashed 38 off 21 on a tough pitch. India made 169 for 7, bowled Sri Lanka out for 45, and won by 124 runs. The quarter-final against Afghanistan had been washed out, so that knock was his first completed innings of the Games. In the final on 3 October in Nisshin he made a brisk 15 off nine balls with two sixes as India posted 211 for 6 and then held Pakistan to 192 for 6, winning by 19 runs and keeping the title won in Hangzhou in 2023.
At 15 years, six months and six days he became the youngest Indian Asian Games gold medallist, taking the mark from shooter Saurabh Chaudhary, who was 16 years, three months and nine days old when he won the men’s 10m air pistol title at Jakarta in 2018. Chaudhary still holds the youngest individual gold, because this one came in a team event. Across two completed innings Sooryavanshi made 53 runs at a strike rate of 176.66.
The IPL file behind that fortnight is why the XI debate will not die.
WHAT THE IPL 2026 HAUL WAS
- Orange Cap: He was the tournament’s leading run-scorer with 776 runs in 16 innings for Rajasthan Royals, the youngest winner of that award.
- Sixes: He hit 72 sixes in the season, a single-season record, and took the Super Sixes prize with it.
- Strike rate: He scored at 237.30 and also collected the Most Valuable Player, Emerging Player and Super Striker awards.
- The earlier jump: He had already become the youngest IPL player at 14 years and 23 days in 2025, and the youngest men’s T20 centurion at 14 years and 32 days.
At the Under-19 World Cup he made 175 off 80 balls against England in the final. That is the batting being asked to wait. The argument against rushing him is not that the hitting is unproven. It is that two other left-field hitters already proved it on the night India lifted the senior trophy, and Gambhir will not reopen that argument after a quiet week.
Abhishek Calls Himself the Elder Brother
The other half of the hidden stake showed up on 5 October, in the same news cycle as the Gambhir clip. Abhishek, the man whose opening berth is the one Sooryavanshi would take, called the 15-year-old smart and mature for his age, “not like a typical 15-year-old,” because he has already been in professional cricket for two or three years. Abhishek said it is his job to make the younger batter feel that the seniors are his big brothers, to get him comfortable, and to tell him to enjoy the work and win when the chance comes.
That warmth is easier to offer when the slot is not in doubt. Gambhir has now said, twice, that Abhishek and Samson stay. Sooryavanshi can be the little brother in the room because the coach has told the room the little brother is not taking anyone’s chair after three or four failures.
India’s T20I squad for West Indies still lists all three. Iyer captains, with Tilak Varma as his deputy. The first match is at Ekana Stadium in Lucknow on 6 October at 7:00 PM IST, then Ranchi on 9 October, Indore on 11 October, Hyderabad on 14 October and Bengaluru on 17 October. Five games is a long enough home stretch for a “longer run” if the staff want one. Gambhir has just said they do not, unless one of the two seniors is dropped, and that dropping either of them is the conversation he does not want.
The XI on 6 October will still have only two opening spots. Gambhir has already named which two names he will not move after a few quiet nights, and which 15-year-old will have to wait while that security holds.
