GTA 6’s 80-Hour Run Counts Goals That Change the Story
Rob Nelson’s 80-hour GTA 6 run included optional goals that alter Jason and Lucia’s story, a messier figure than a straight main-campaign length.
Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson took 80 hours to finish Grand Theft Auto 6, counting the main story and optional goals that change how it ends. He logged that run in February, months before the public build. GTA 6 arrives November 19 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
The 80-hour clock is being read as a straight campaign length. Nelson did not publish a main-only time. He counted “optional goals with narrative ramifications,” then asked players to shower, walk, and still live in Vice City. That mix, not a round number, is what reviewers, streamers, and anyone with a job will actually have to plan around.
The figure came out of an Edinburgh preview tied to Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look, a nearly 27-minute slice of Jason and Lucia’s story in Leonida that went public on August 27.
Eighty Hours, and It Still Was Not 100 Percent
Nelson oversees Rockstar North with Aaron Garbut. In February he played the game he has been building, then told visitors the run lasted 80 hours. The total covered the main story and some optional goals that feed back into the plot. He did not say he chased every collectible, every stranger, or a 100 percent checklist.
He already knew the missions, the map, and the systems. A first-time player will not. A GTA campaign also is not a straight line. People peel off to steal a car, follow a fight, or sit in a bar, then come back to the yellow blip hours later. Treat 80 hours as a floor for a story-plus-some-sides run, not as a clean story-only number and not as a completionist ceiling.
THE FEBRUARY CLOCK
- February 2026: Nelson finishes an 80-hour playthrough that includes the main story and some optional goals with plot weight.
- June 25, 2026: Pre-orders open at midnight local time for the standard and Ultimate editions.
- August 27, 2026: The Extended Look premieres, and Nelson’s 80-hour remark becomes public during the Edinburgh previews.
- November 12, 2026: Digital pre-orders can pre-load; physical boxes with a download code go on sale to support that pre-load.
- November 19, 2026: GTA 6 launches on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
Rockstar has not posted an official “time to beat.” Until players log their own clocks, the only hard number is one developer’s February mix.
The Optional Goals That Change Jason and Lucia
The phrase that matters sits next to the 80 hours: optional goals with narrative ramifications. In the same preview cycle, Nelson described a relationship system that tracks whether Jason and Lucia stay lovers or work as partners in crime. Spending time together in the open world is how you keep the romance alive. Playing the missions, he said, may not be enough.
I have to say it feels great, if you are into it as a concept. Don’t bother with it if you aren’t. Up to you.

They still back each other on jobs. The story still needs them together for most of the run. What changes is the version of the couple you get. Nelson said whether you nurture the relationship “will definitely have a bearing on how their story plays out.” He listed the hours that feed that system, and they are not mission blips.
THE HOURS THAT FEED THE PLOT
- Shared crime: Robbing stores and banks together counts as time spent as a unit, the same as a date.
- Quiet time: Walking, holding hands, the zoo, scuba, the beach, kayaking, pool, and mini golf all raise the bond.
- The opt-out: Ignore it and they remain partners in crime; Nelson said Rockstar will not force a romance on anyone who does not want one.
- The cost: Skip those hours and you still finish, but you finish a different story than the one Nelson played.
That is the second clock inside the 80 hours. In older GTA games, side jobs were extra. Here, some of that extra rewrites the couple at the center of the game. A reviewer on a deadline who sprints the missions will not play the build Nelson described. A completionist who does every zoo trip will play a longer one.
How Long Rockstar’s Last Three Games Take
Headlines put 80 hours against a 30-hour GTA 5 story and a 50-to-60-hour Red Dead Redemption 2 story. Player logs on HowLongToBeat, which averages thousands of diaries, give a cleaner split between story-only, story plus extras, and full completion. Nelson’s mix sits next to Red Dead’s extras band, not next to GTA 5’s story-only number.
THE ROCKSTAR RUNTIME LADDER
| Game | Main story | Main + sides | Completionist |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grand Theft Auto IV | 27 hours | 40½ hours | 72½ hours |
| Grand Theft Auto V | 32 hours | 51½ hours | 89½ hours |
| Red Dead Redemption 2 | 50½ hours | 84½ hours | 195 hours |
| GTA 6 (Nelson, February) | Not published | 80 hours, story plus some plot-changing optional goals | Not published |
Grand Theft Auto V’s 32-hour main story is the baseline those headlines used. Eighty hours is 2.5 times that figure, which sounds like a new species of GTA. Set the same 80 hours beside Red Dead Redemption 2’s 50½-hour main story and the extras column of 84½ hours, and Nelson’s run is 4.5 hours shorter than the average Red Dead player who did the story plus sides.
GTA 6 can still be the longest Rockstar campaign a person can play without chasing 100 percent. We do not know the split inside Nelson’s 80 hours. If the optional slice was small, the missions themselves may already outlast Red Dead’s story. If the optional slice was the relationship and a handful of personal jobs, a mission-only run could land closer to the mid-50s. Rockstar has not said which.
What it has said is that some of those extra hours now change the ending you get. That is a different product from GTA 5, where extras mostly padded a 32-hour plot, and from Red Dead, where stranger missions sat beside a 50½-hour story without rewriting Arthur and John as a couple you can neglect.
Nelson Wants Players to Leave the House
After the 80-hour remark, Nelson described the pace he wants. He hopes people get up, drink coffee, shower, get dressed, and go out for exercise, then come back, talk to someone, wander, get in trouble, rob a place, and make money. The list is a design brief. GTA 6 is built so a session can be a walk and a stick-up, not a six-hour raid on the mission list.
I hope that there will be people that want to get up, have a cup of coffee, shower, get dressed, go out for a little exercise. Interact with some people, explore, maybe get into some trouble. Rob some places, make some money.

That pitch collides with the number. Eighty hours at 1.5 hours a night is about 53 days. Stretch it with the zoo, the gym, and the relationship and the calendar slides into the new year. The first joke that attached itself to the 80-hour news was that some players will not see sunlight. Nelson is asking for the opposite, a crime game you put down like a job.
Geoff Keighley, who runs the Game Awards, put the business version of the same idea in an email: most blockbusters have an opening weekend, and GTA has an opening decade. Grand Theft Auto V has sold 230 million copies since 2013. Take-Two puts the whole Grand Theft Auto line at more than 470 million units sold-in. A long single-player is how Rockstar keeps that decade from collapsing into one weekend of story and a hollow online shell.
Review Week Cannot Hold This Runtime
Critics usually get days, sometimes a couple of weeks, with a final build. An 80-hour story-plus-optional run does not fit that window if the optional slice is required to judge the couple the trailers sell. A review that sprints the missions will miss the romance system Nelson called a reason they told this story. A review that does the zoo and the kayaks will file late, or file from the middle of the plot.
Streamers have a different problem. A launch week spent on a slow Bonnie-and-Clyde story fights the clip economy that wants a crash every four minutes. Preview visitors were told the game will include a copyright-free music toggle for creators, which is a practical concession to people who will live in Leonida on camera. It does not shrink the plot. It only makes the long sessions legal to leave up.
Workers who planned a long weekend around November 19 will not finish. Parents who play after bedtime will still be in early chapters at Christmas. The 80-hour figure is friendly to the people who wanted another Red Dead-scale story, and hard on anyone who has to have an opinion, a thumbnail, or a completed save before the first weekend is over.
Leonida Is Built to Interrupt You
Nelson told YouTuber TGG, who visited Rockstar North for the same preview, that the full map is about twice GTA 5 and about three times Red Dead Redemption 2’s playable area. Vice City itself is about twice Los Santos. Vice City plus its suburbs, he said, is about 11 times Los Santos and its surrounds. Those ratios are the reason an 80-hour story still leaves a second game on the table.
THE MAP AGAINST THE CLOCK
- Full state: Leonida is about 2 times GTA 5 and about 3 times Red Dead’s playable map, per Nelson to TGG.
- The city: Vice City is about 2 times Los Santos.
- The sprawl: Vice City and its suburbs are about 11 times Los Santos and its surrounding built-up areas.
- The regions named so far: Vice City, Port Gellhorn, Leonida Keys, the Grassrivers, Mount Kalaga National Park, and Ambrosia.
A map that large is how optional goals stop being a menu and start being a commute. Checking on Lucia, Nelson showed visitors, can mean sending the camera up over the city and dropping onto her in the street. Each of those detours is minutes. Stack them for a relationship you are trying to keep, and they become the difference between a 50-hour plot and an 80-hour one.
TGG also said Nelson told him the 80 hours included the story and some side content, not all of it. That matches the February wording. The open world after the credits is still uncounted. So is whatever GTA Online becomes; Nelson would not answer questions about the next Online during those visits.
November 19 Arrives Locked at 30fps
GTA 6 launches November 19, 2026 for $79.99 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, with an Ultimate Edition at $99.99. Digital copies can pre-load from November 12. Buy before November 20 and the Vintage Vice City Pack is included. There is no PC date. Today is September 2, 78 days out, and November 19 is a Thursday.
Preview sessions on a base PS5 ran at 4K and 30 frames per second, TGG said after the Edinburgh visit. Nelson told visitors the consoles were running at 30fps during this stretch of development and that a 60fps option was still with the technical team. For an 80-hour game, frame rate is not a spec-sheet footnote. It is how every drive, every gunfight, and every long night in the relationship system will feel, hundreds of times.
The public gets that build on November 19. Nelson’s February clock stopped at 80 hours, and he was not chasing 100 percent.
