Bucky Barnes Goes Down in a Blast He Chose
Bucky Barnes takes a nuclear blast in Avengers Armageddon #4, 85 years after his debut, while Marvel’s notes sell Miracleman instead.
Bucky Barnes takes a point-blank nuclear blast in Avengers: Armageddon #4, and the art shows his body coming apart.
His metal arm flies off. Captain Marvel stands in the same shockwave and holds. Marvel’s sales copy for the issue names a different character.
A Nuclear Blast Takes the Winter Soldier
Chip Zdarsky’s next-to-last chapter of the five-issue event, drawn by Delio Diaz and Frank Alpizar and colored by Jesus Aburtov, went on sale as the $4.99 issue dated September 16. It runs 23 pages and carries a T+ rating. Thaddeus Ross, working with Russia, puts nuclear warheads back in play. David Colton, the 21st-century Captain America from Zdarsky’s 2025 run, answers by trying to kill every warhead on Earth.
The rest of the Avengers condemn that strike. Bucky Barnes backs it. They stop some of the missiles. Another lands on the fight between Colton and an enhanced Red Hulk, and Bucky is standing in the impact.
The page puts him next to Carol Danvers. She rides out the shockwave. His body shreds. The metal arm tears free. Later, on another plane, Colton talks with a vision of his mother and admits “people are dead” around him.
That line is as close as the book comes to a roll call. It does not need a caption. Marvel’s own files on the Winter Soldier are blunt about why Carol can stand there and he cannot: Bucky never received a Super Soldier Serum. He fights at peak human level with a robotic left arm and a lifetime of dirty work. A binary hero walks through a nuke. A man with no serum does not.
He Died on a Bomb Once Before
Joe Simon and Jack Kirby put James Buchanan Barnes beside Steve Rogers when the character first appeared in Captain America Comics #1, cover-dated March 1941. That is 85 years before this issue. The kid from the army bases was the partner in the newsreels and the one who handled jobs that would not make the footage.
Toward the end of the war, Baron Heinrich Zemo launched an experimental drone plane rigged with a bomb. Cap and Bucky jumped for it. Rogers saw they could not beat the fuse and jumped clear. Bucky got stuck. The blast threw Cap into the North Atlantic and, for decades, the books treated Bucky as gone. Avengers #4 in 1964 made that version official when a thawed Steve Rogers woke up screaming for his partner.
Shop wisdom even had a name for it. Nobody stayed dead except Bucky Barnes, Jason Todd, and Uncle Ben. Then Ed Brubaker broke the clause in 2005. The plane had taken the left arm, not the life. General Vasily Karpov’s crew pulled Barnes out of the water with brain damage and no memory, fitted the metal arm, and ran him as the Winter Soldier between cryo-sleeps. Cap later used a cracked Cosmic Cube to give him his life back, the good and the bad.
The new page is that first death with the yield turned up. A bomb. The arm coming off. A partner who can survive the cold or the shockwave when he cannot. He volunteered this time.
Marvel Announced Miracleman Instead
Read Marvel’s notes for the same issue and you would not know the Winter Soldier is on the floor. The company sold September 16, 2026 as Miracleman’s debut in the Marvel Universe. The Origin Box that gave Colton his power, the notes say, belonged to Miracleman. Colton is now that power’s champion. Shops had already sold out printings of the event. The copy points at November’s Avengers #1.
Zdarsky, in Marvel’s August preview, called the chapter “a huge swing” and said he was surprised the company let him do it. At San Diego Comic-Con on July 23, 2026, asked about Bucky’s absence from the new Avengers covers, he told the room, “I got plans for Bucky.” He added that Bucky features pretty prominently at the end of Armageddon. Issue #4 is that plan, standing him in the fireball. The press notes still belong to the man who walks out of it.
Dave Colton is a fascinating, complicated character, now much more so as he takes on the mantle of Miracleman.
Wil Moss, Avengers editor
Moss said Zdarsky has big plans for Colton that will hit the Avengers and the wider Marvel Universe. That is the official frame: a birth. The Winter Soldier is the unpaid line on the same page. Online, the spoiler traffic followed the same split. Miracleman ate the conversation. The disintegration panel sat in plain sight and still had to be pointed at.
Why Bucky Barnes Stood With David Colton
Bucky did not wander into Colton’s war. The last year of his books had already taught him what happens when the worst people get the biggest weapons, and who he can still trust when they do.
WHY HE BACKED THE STRIKE
- The clones: He had just captained a volatile New Avengers roster against the Jackal’s Killuminati, weaponized copies of Earth’s sharpest minds, and watched mass-destruction tools slide toward erratic hands.
- The break: Black Widow’s manipulation cracked what faith he had left in the people standing next to him, and in the idea that the usual channels would hold.
- The lesson: A life spent fighting tyrants left him sure that if the payloads exist, someone will pick them up.
- The split: Wolverine argued that stripping the globe of its deterrents sets a dangerous precedent. Bucky treated the moment as fight or die.
So he stood with the only person in the room willing to shoot the warheads out of the sky. Colton’s godlike body was supposed to be the shield. The missile still found the man without the serum.
The Metal Arm Comes Off Again
This is the third time a Marvel event has sold Bucky’s body by tearing the arm away. The first time built the Winter Soldier. The second time, in 2011, lasted until a wartime chemical put him back on his feet. The third time is the one Marvel did not advertise.
THREE TIMES THE ARM COMES OFF
| Story | Year | What happens | What follows |
|---|---|---|---|
| Zemo’s drone plane | 1945 (shown in 1964) | Left arm lost in the blast | Presumed dead until 2005 |
| Fear Itself | 2011 | Prosthetic ripped off; hammer through the chest | Revived with the Infinity Formula |
| Avengers: Armageddon #4 | 2026 | Metal arm torn free; body shreds in a nuke | Off the November Avengers list |
After Civil War, when Crossbones and a controlled Sharon Carter dropped Steve Rogers on the courthouse steps, Bucky took the shield and became Captain America in 2008. Fear Itself put him back in that uniform long enough for Sin, powered up as Skadi, to tear the arm off and drive a hammer through his chest. Nick Fury’s people used the last of the Infinity Formula, the chemical that had kept Fury himself going, and Bucky went underground again. Comics can reverse a death. They have done it to this man in public. The pattern is the tell: when Marvel wants Bucky’s story to break, the arm comes off first.
November’s Avengers Leave Him Off the Sheet
Zdarsky and artist Marco Checchetto launch Avengers #1 on November 4, 2026. Marvel has already named the team that walks out of Armageddon. Bucky Barnes is not on it.
THE NOVEMBER LINEUP
- Captain Marvel: Carol Danvers, the one who held the shockwave on the blast page.
- Spider-Man: Peter Parker.
- Daredevil: Matt Murdock.
- Wolverine: Logan, who argued against the strike Bucky backed.
- Luke Cage: the street-level heavy of the new roster.
- Miracleman: David Colton, the man who walked out of the same fire.
The world, Marvel says, has turned its back on Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. A demonic invasion is next. Colton’s new power is the wild card the book wants readers to fear. Avengers: Armageddon #5, on sale October 21, 2026, is solicited as “Darkness Before the Dawn: The Fall of the Avengers,” with humanity turning on super heroes and a bill coming due for Colton. The Winter Soldier has already paid in advance, on a page the sales copy never named.
